Novell Helps Healthcare Providers Organize, Secure Patient Information

- Novell Clinical Workstation solution quickly delivers applications and information securely to medical personnel

- Framework integrates multiple platforms and information sources using open standards

- Helps healthcare organizations meet regulatory compliance requirements

DALLAS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Conference 2005) - Feb 14, 2005 - Novell unveiled today a Clinical Workstation solution to help healthcare providers effectively secure and manage the increasingly complex data requirements of the healthcare industry. The growth of electronic health records, computerized physician order entry and other online activities is creating new challenges for healthcare organizations, even as HIPAA privacy and security regulations impose tighter controls on patient information. Leveraging Novell's industry leading identity management and cross-platform network and web services, the NovellŽ Clinical Workstation solution will let doctors and care givers access clinical information across the organization safely and quickly, spending less time at the computer and more time providing patient care.

Novell's Clinical Workstation solution leverages both identity management technologies and integration tools to effectively connect disparate clinical applications and back-end systems and deliver information to medical personnel at the right time and right place. Clinical Workstation ensures fast, secure, role-based and location-based access to key clinical and business applications, giving healthcare organizations the capability to deliver next generation clinical desktops on a variety of devices. Key features of the Novell Clinical Workstation include:

-Quick log-in /log-out of workstations, measured in only a few seconds, not minutes

-Strong authentication methods, for example, biometrics and proximity, to protect data -Single Sign-On to most target applications -Cross-platform support for main frame, fat/thin client, and Web applications -Centralized management of passwords and user IDs

-Support for multiple devices, including wireless, PCs, laptops, and PDAs -A personalized web based desktop environment -Secure, remote access without the need to use a VPN -Incorporation of context management (CCOW) for consistency of patient context across multiple applications, improving clinician ease of use and patient safety

"With the Novell Clinical Workstation, the faster log-in and single sign-on capabilities provide the ability for our physicians to quickly access patient information and make critical decisions affecting patient care" said Daniel Stross, Regional Technology Director of St John Health.

Reflecting the complexity of today's healthcare environments, Novell Clinical Workstation is a customizable solution, composed of a variety of Novell technologies that can be deployed flexibly to address the specific business and security policy needs of the organization. With the help of Novell professional services and backed by Novell's training and technical support, customers can develop a road map and phased implementation to provide a cost-effective, fully-supported deployment in their environment.

"Novell Clinical Workstation is about speed, simplicity, accuracy and security," said David Bebko, North America director of industry marketing for Novell. "For the doctor, it makes getting information on patients fast and easy, with a consistent look and feel anywhere they choose to access the information. For the healthcare organization, it ensures ease of management and privacy protection, helping meet HIPAA and other regulatory compliance requirements. We can now make the computer work the way medical personnel work rather than forcing them to work around how a computer works."
