New Arc-Resistant Controller from Rockwell Automation Provides Stronger Protection for Workers in Medium-Voltage Environments

CENTERLINE ArcShield medium-voltage controller provides Type 2 arc-resistant protection for personnel safety

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario, Feb. 7, 2005 — Users of medium-voltage power can now receive more safety protection with the introduction of the Allen-Bradley CENTERLINE ArcShield medium-voltage arc-resistant controller from Rockwell Automation. The new controller provides rugged, reliable control and protection for utility workers and others working in environments that require high voltages (between 2,300 and 7,200 volts), including petrochemical, utilities and forestry — industries that demand arc-resistant technology for employee protection.

The ArcShield controller builds on standard safety features and benefits of CENTERLINE medium-voltage controllers, bringing new enhancements that protect personnel from arc flashes. Specialized arc vents on the unit’s roof allow an arc flash to escape safely through vents to protect personnel on all four sides of the controller. In the event of an arc flash, the ArcShield controller can safely redirect energy out of the top of the unit and away from personnel.

ArcShield arc-resistant products provide Type 2 accessibility and are tested to the IEEE C37.20.7 standard. The ArcShield controller’s cabinet is reinforced with support brackets and plates and uses 12-gauge steel for all doors, side, roof and back sheets. Extra-strength, multi-point latches and robust door hinges add to the security of the unit. The low voltage panel is sealed to maintain arc-resistant protection when the door is open for maintenance purposes.

The ArcShield medium voltage controller is available in two standard product formats and ratings, 18-inch incoming units and 400 amp, one-high full-voltage non-reversing (FVNR) controllers. The product can also be used where arc-resistant circuit breaker technology is needed for transformer feeder applications.

Standard CENTERLINE motor controller safety features include:

Three isolated compartments (power bus, low voltage, power cell);

CENTERLINE horizontal power bus with molded bus supports for better distribution of mechanical forces during a fault;

Continuous copper ground bus in one-quarter-inch by two-inch dimensions;

Secure power cell door that is both bolted and latched;

Viewing window in power cell door, to allow operators to confirm the status of the isolation switch before opening door;

Large low-voltage panel, painted white for high visibility;

Test circuit and plug for external control power supply, which allows testing and troubleshooting of power cell without exposing personnel to medium voltage;

Non-load bread isolation switch with mechanical and electrical interlocks;

Simple direct-drive operating handle and interlock mechanism, which helps prevent the power cell door from being opened when the contactor is energized; and

Fixed mounted vacuum contactor, which eliminates hot spots and reduces maintenance.
