DVB-H Chip enables mobile TV reception.


February 11, 2005 - Facilitating deployment of digital TV services on hand-held devices, DIB7000™ digital TV chip is capable of de-modulating Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) and Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) transmissions. Product features MPE-FEC frame extraction and correction and enables clear, continuous reception at speeds in excess of 100 mph. Operating at less than 25 mW in DVB-H mode, single chip integrates into small form factor display devices with its 8 x 8 mm package.

DiBcom Demonstrates World's First DVB-H Chip for Mobile TV Reception

PALAISEAU, France, Feb. 7 -- Heralding a new stage in the deployment of digital TV services on hand-held devices, DiBcom today introduced the world's first chip capable of de-modulating both Digital Video Broadcasting -- Handheld (DVB-H) and Digital Video Broadcasting -- Terrestrial (DVB-T) transmissions. Scheduled for integration into mobile handsets and other portable devices beginning in March 2005, the DiBcom DIB7000(TM) digital TV chip features robust mobile DVB-T/H reception capability with ultra low- power consumption, providing an optimal integrated solution. Building on extensive experience of integrated circuit development for the mobile and portable reception of DVB-T in diverse products such as mobile car TV receivers, TV on laptop PCs, and portable LCD TVs, DiBcom is demonstrating the integration of the DIB7000 into mobile platforms exclusively at the 3GSM World Congress being held February 14-17, 2005, in Cannes, France.

Unmatched in the industry, DiBcom's DIB7000 digital TV chip enables clear and continuous reception at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Operating at less than 25 mW in DVB-H mode, the single chip solves power consumption problems and is easily integrated into the smallest form factor display devices with its 8x8 mm package.

"Mobile TV is a hot topic these days," said Allen Nogee, principal analyst at In-Stat. "Many handset manufacturers, laptop PC and portable LCD TV suppliers are showing strong interest in this fascinating new development, which will provide access to TV at any time for everyone at the lowest cost. With its low cost of deployment, DVB-H mobile TV broadcasting complements existing 3G streaming solutions, providing mobile phone operators the advantage of revenue generation from bi-directional services such as videophone, access to Internet portals, and e-mail / instant-messaging. The DVB-H broadcast standard is poised to enable mobile TV for the mass market, similar to what high definition is doing for the home TV market."

DVB-H is expected to be deployed in Europe in 2006, and as early as 2005 in the United States. Crown Castle, a pioneer in DVB-H infrastructure and deployment, has already announced the roll-out of DVB-H services on a nationwide basis, and has selected DiBcom to participate in its trials in Pittsburgh, PA.

DVB-H versus DVB-T: Extended Functionality

The DiBcom DVB-H DIB7000 digital TV chip includes the core mobile DVB-T functionality (2K, 8K modes and support for the new DVB-H 4K mode), as well as the new DVB-H.

MPE-FEC frame extraction and correction, dramatically improving the quality of mobile and portable reception (a 6 dB gain has been achieved). Time slicing is supported and can reduce power consumption by a factor of 10 in DVB-H mode as compared to DVB-T. The DIB7000 digital TV chip supports use of DVB-H in handheld devices in the U.S., or DVB-T and DVB-H in portable devices such as LCD TV and laptop PCs in several regions including Europe. Samples of the DIB7000 are immediately available for qualified customers and pricing is $14 each for quantities of 10K units.

Demonstrations of the new DiBcom DIB7000 digital TV chip can be seen at the 3GSM World Congress 2005 in DiBcom's stand J23, Hall 3.
