HELIOS Marathon Portable Liquid Oxygen Unit Offers Unprecedented Duration for Oxygen Therapy Patients

Puritan Bennett's Device is the First Portable Oxygen Unit to Provide Multiple Continuous and Demand Flow Settings

PLEASANTON, Calif., Jan. 28 - Puritan Bennett today announced availability of the Puritan Bennett(R) HELiOS(R) Marathon(TM) (H850) Portable Oxygen Unit, a product line extension of the highly popular HELiOS Personal Oxygen System. The HELiOS Marathon is the first HELiOS portable liquid oxygen unit to provide patients with a range of continuous flow settings as well as the option to operate in "demand flow" mode, which conserves oxygen during exhalation.

Now oxygen therapy patients, who may not have previously qualified for the HELiOS system due to the need for higher oxygen levels provided by continuous flow, can enjoy new levels of comfort, convenience and mobility with the HELiOS Marathon unit. In addition, the HELiOS Marathon provides unprecedented duration for a portable liquid oxygen system, lasting up to 20 hours on a demand flow setting and up to 5.5 hours in a continuous flow mode. The HELiOS system also includes the HELiOS Plus(TM) (H300) Portable Oxygen Unit, which operates in demand flow mode and lasts up to 10 hours.

"The HELiOS Marathon Portable Oxygen Unit benefits demand flow patients who want to be on the go longer and also continuous flow patients who want to enjoy a portable system for the first time and get out and about once again," said Rick Mendez, marketing manager, Puritan Bennett respiratory homecare.

The HELiOS Marathon unit gives patients all-day freedom to pursue a full range of activities without requiring them to refill or bring a backup oxygen supply. Weighing only 5.6 pounds when full, the new HELiOS Marathon Portable Oxygen Unit is small and light enough to be comfortably "worn" by patients without the burden of cumbersome tubes or heavy canisters that can reduce mobility.

"Puritan Bennett continues to remove the barriers of home oxygen therapy and strives to provide oxygen therapy patients with new solutions that help them maintain their active lifestyles," said Raj Roychoudury, director of marketing, Puritan Bennett respiratory homecare. "With the launch of our new HELiOS Marathon Portable Oxygen Unit, we meet a key goal of bringing mobility, independence and freedom to potentially all ambulatory oxygen therapy patients."

Additional features of the HELiOS Marathon Portable Oxygen Unit include:

• A "no spill" design that operates in multiple positions.

• Compatibility with existing Puritan Bennett Universal, HELiOS and Companion(R) liquid oxygen reservoirs.

• Wearable accessories such as a convenient backpack.

The need for portable oxygen products such as the HELiOS Personal Oxygen System continues to grow. Many patients who are prescribed supplemental oxygen suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). According to the American Lung Association, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death -- behind only cardiovascular disease, cancers and stroke. The American Lung Association reports that COPD claims the lives of 118,000 Americans annually. In 2002, 11.2 million U.S. adults were diagnosed with COPD, but up to 24 million U.S. adults have evidence of impaired lung function, indicating an under-diagnosis of the disease. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the most common diseases that compose COPD. With the introduction of the HELiOS Marathon unit, virtually all ambulatory COPD patients can benefit from the independence the HELiOS Personal Oxygen System provides.
