FCI® Designs 280-Position PCI Express™ Card Edge Connectors

FCI, a leading supplier of connectors and interconnect systems, introduces two new 280-position vertical card edge connectors that enable the implementation of high-speed, serial PCI Express signaling to riser cards in rack-mount servers. Connector series 10037901 is keyed to accept either a standard PCI Express x8 add-in card or a 280-position riser card that can support PCI, PCI-X or PCI Express add-in cards. Part series 10027747 is keyed to accept a unique 3-slot riser that can provide two x8 PCI Express slots supporting x4 links and one PCI-X slot in a 2U form factor.

“Both connectors are designed to accept a 1.58mm (0.062”) thick add-in card,” said David Sideck, FCI Regional Marketing Manager. “Molded polarization keys on the connectors and corresponding notches on the add-in cards prevent improper card insertion.”

Dual-row card edge contacts on 1.0mm pitch are offset to form four rows of through-mount soldertails on 2.0mm pitch for easy wave soldering. The soldertail length supports use on 2.36mm (0.093”) thick motherboards. Metal board-locks provide connector-to-motherboard retention prior to soldering. Connector versions that are compatible with lead-free soldering processes are also available.

The resin for the connector bodies is a high-strength thermoplastic compatible with lead-free soldering temperatures. Tin finish on both soldertails and board-locks also aids compliance with lead-free requirements.

Typical pricing for a connector with tin-lead soldertail finish is $1.20 each for 1000-piece order quantities. Samples are available for delivery, with production lead times from stock to 6 weeks.
