December 14, 2004 - Slug-Free Light Dies are suited for punching thin sheet metal where recommended die clearance is less than 0.008 in. Units punch stainless steel up to 0.032 in. thick, mild steel up to 0.040 in., and aluminum up to 0.048 in. thick. During each punching cycle, die uses small angled notch to create protrusions around edge of slug. As slug passes through die, position of protrusion relative to notch changes, and slug is safely cleared from punching zone on next stroke.

Mate Introduces New Slug Free Light Dies for Thin Sheet Metal - They Eliminate Slug Pulling and Increase Part Quality
Anoka, Minnesota: Mate Precision Tooling’s new Slug Free Light dies are designed to increase punched part quality and eliminate slug pulling problems in thin sheet metal.
During each punching cycle, the Mate Slug Free Light die creates a series of very small protrusions around the edge of the slug. Each of these small protrusions is made by a small angled notch that is cut into the die opening. As the slug passes through the die, the position of the protrusion relative to the notch changes slightly. Pressure between the slug and the die land occurs, preventing it from pulling back through the top of the die and onto the work piece. The slug is then safely cleared on the next stroke from the punching zone. By eliminating slug pulling with every punch cycle, piece part quality is assured and tool life is increased.
Slug Free Light dies are designed for high performance punching of thin sheet metal with the following maximum thicknesses and where the recommended die clearance is less than 0.008 inch (0.20 mm):
• Stainless steel to 0.032 inch (0.80 mm)
• Mild steel to 0.040 inch (1.00 mm)
• Aluminum to 0.048 inch (1.20 mm)
Slug Free Light dies are available for all thick turret tooling including Mate’s Ultra® tooling product offerings.
