Gas Turbine suits industrial applications in 6 MW range.

December 13, 2004 - Cold-end-drive, single-shaft Taurusâ„¢ 65 generator suits cogeneration, combined cycle, and other power generation applications. Generator set is rated at 6000 kWe for continuous duty at ISO conditions. It features 13-stage axial compressor with 15:1 pressure ratio that produces air inlet flow of 19.4 kg/sec, and utilizes 3-stage turbine with shrouded stage-3 turbine blade. SoLoNOâ„¢ combustion system reduces formation of NOx and CO, eliminating post-combustion clean-up devices.

Solar Turbines Announces Next Member to Family of Gas Turbines

ORLANDO, FLORIDA USA (1 December 2004) Solar Turbines Incorporated is introducing a cold-end-drive, single-shaft Taurusâ„¢ 65 industrial gas turbine generator set for cogeneration, combined-cycle and other industrial power generation applications. Solar® developed the Taurus 65 to meet the power generation market requirements for a more efficient, lower emissions and higher exhaust temperature product in the 6 MW size range.

The Taurus 65 gas turbine generator set will be rated at 6000 kWe for continuous duty at ISO conditions. The first Taurus 65 cold-end-drive generator set will be installed at Solar Turbines' manufacturing facility in San Diego, California. Commissioning will start during the first quarter of 2005, supplying power for Solar's manufacturing operations. The first production unit will be available for shipment in August 2005. A dual fuel configuration will be available for shipment in March 2006.

"High thermal efficiency, coupled with high exhaust temperature and low emissions make the Taurus 65 a very attractive product for combined heat and power applications," said Adam Robinson, Marketing Manager for Solar's industrial power generation business.

"The overall system efficiency results in lower fuel consumption, which is an important driver when considering a cogeneration system," he said.

The Taurus 65 was designed to leverage both the proven designs of the Centaur® 50 and Taurus 60 products and the advanced technology developed for the Taurus 70 and Titanâ„¢ 130 products. It features a 13-stage axial compressor with a 15:1 pressure ratio that produces an air inlet flow of 19.4 kg/sec (49.2 lbs/sec). The Taurus 65 was designed with a three-stage turbine and a shrouded stage 3 turbine blade for enhanced component efficiency. Also incorporated into the design is Solar's dry, lean premixed SoLoNOxâ„¢ combustion system to reduce the formation of NOx and CO without using complex post-combustion clean-up devices.

Concurrent with the engine development process, a 6 Sigma package team developed a new package that increases modularity for ease of operation and maintenance and enhanced safety. The package will become a universal package design for several other Solar products, including the Centaur 40, Centaur 50, Taurus 60 and Taurus 65, providing customers with a number of upgrade options from 3.5 to 6 MW.

The Taurus 65 gas turbine generator set has a heat rate of 10 943 kJ/kWe-hr (10,373 Btu/kWe-hr), corresponding to a thermal efficiency of 33 percent. With an exhaust gas mass flow of 70 614 kg/sec (155,677 lbs/hr) and 547°C (1017°F) exhaust temperature, the Taurus 65 turbine is an excellent source of thermal energy usable for numerous waste heat recovery applications including steam production, absorption chilling, or various direct and indirect heating activities.

Designed for cogeneration applications in the 6-MW range, the Taurus 65 generator set offers superior overall system efficiency and a clean emissions profile resulting in a high value, alternative solution to grid-based power.

Solar Turbines Incorporated, headquartered in San Diego, California, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc. Solar manufactures the world's most widely used family of industrial gas turbines, which range from 1 to 15 MW (1590 to 19,830 hp). More than 11,900 Solar® gas turbines are installed in 93 nations on land and offshore. Primary applications include electric power generation, cil and natural gas production and gas transmission.
