Laser Sensors offer long stand-off and measurement range.


December 3, 2004 - Series DLS-2000 single point laser sensors have offset distances of 4.0 in., 10 in., or 19.7 in. for long-range version. They deliver 25 micron resolution at 1.8 kHz scan rate, 1.667 kHz for long-range version. Measurement range is 11.8, 24, or 118 in. with accuracy of ±0.05%. Digital RS-232 and RS-485 interface converter permits interface connection to most PC or PLCs, and aluminum enclosure allows operation in temperature range of 32°–122°F.

LMI Technologies Introduces Series of Affordable, High Accuracy Laser Sensors with Long Range Capabilities

DETROIT, Michigan — LMI Technologies (USA), Inc. has introduced a series of single point laser sensors that are well suited for thickness measurement, profiling, positioning and other applications in most industries that require a sensor with a long stand-off and measurement range.

The DLS-2000 line of laser displacement sensors from LMI Technologies are lower in cost than many other comparable sensors, but at the same time highly accurate and among the most versatile in the industry due to its small size.

Offset distance, which is the distance from the sensor face to the beginning of the measurement range, is 4.0 in. (100 mm), 10 in. (254 mm) or 19.7 in. (500 mm) for the long-range version. The sensors deliver a 25-micron resolution at a 1.8 kHz scan rate or a scan rate of 1.667 kHz for the long-range version. Measurement range is 11.8 (300 mm), 24 in. (610 mm) or 118 in. (3000 mm), depending on the model selected. Accuracy is +/- 0.05%.

"The DLS-2000 sensor's size and long measurement range makes these world class sensors some of the most versatile on the market," noted Mike Snow, Regional Sales Manager, of LMI Technologies. "Its affordable cost also makes it appealing to cost conscious managers."

Sensor Described

Using laser triangulation principles, the CCD-based DLS-2000 series incorporates automatic laser power control that compensates for changes in color and surface characteristics. By eliminating a need for a separate controller, the sensor conserves production space and decreases set up time.

A digital RS-232 and RS-485 interface converter permits interface
connection to most PC or PLCs to manipulate common configuration parameters and provide simple solutions. Utility set-up software is Windows 3.1, 95 or NT compatible. An analog output (0 to 10 VDC and/or 4 to 20 mA) is also available. Resolution is either 0.001 in. or 0.002 in. (0.025 mm to 0.051 mm) for digital output or 0.003 in. or 0.006 in. (0.075 to 0.152 mm) for analog output.

The 655 nm or 670 nm Class Illb laser sensor comes in an anodized aluminum enclosure that allows operation in temperature ranges from 32°F to 122°F (0°C to 50°C). Class Illb lasers have the same FDA regulations as eye safe Class lasers, yet allow for better performance and a slightly higher laser power.

The small spot size of 0.12 in. x 0.04 in. (3.05 xx 1.02 mm) allows precise targeting of even the smallest components. The compact sensor measures 7.25 in. (184.2 mm) wide, by 3.88 in. (98.4 mm) high and 1.56 in. (39.7 mm) deep, allowing it to function in smaller spaces than many competitive sensors. The long-range series sensor measures 16.16 in. (422 mm) wide by 3.87 in (98 mm) high and 1.56 in. (39.7 mm) deep.

Sensors can be custom designed for particular OEM applications.
