Thermo Electron Expands Explosives Detection Product Line

WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 29 - Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE:TMO) today announced the launch of the new EGIS(TM) Defender, a next-generation explosives trace detection system to simultaneously detect commercial and military explosives and narcotics. The EGIS Defender will be used at airports, security checkpoints, high-threat facilities like nuclear power plants, border crossings and any sensitive security points around the world that require protection from explosives.

"Thermo continues to expand its line of highly sensitive, fixed and portable instruments for monitoring and safeguarding airports, seaports, borders and critical facilities," said Greg Herrema, president of Thermo's Environmental Instruments division. "Our EGIS Defender system sets a new standard in explosives trace detection and gives a clear advantage to security personnel charged with protecting high-risk areas."

The EGIS Defender combines Thermo's patented high-speed gas chromatography (HSGC) with Micro Differential Ion Mobility Spectrometry (microDMx(TM)) technology from Sionex Corporation to set a new benchmark in explosives trace detection, providing industry-leading sensitivity, the broadest range of explosives compound detection and low false positives in a compact, portable unit. One of the EGIS Defender's most significant features is its ability to respond to new and emerging explosive compound threats through future software upgrades, thus ensuring effective maximum protection from explosives attacks well into the future.

The EGIS Defender trace detection system is part of Thermo's full range of security products and services for the detection of nuclear materials, explosives and chemical agents, and radiological protection. Thermo specializes in systems for first responders and for the scanning and screening of people, parcels and vehicles.
