Linear Drive has zero backlash and jam-proof design.

November 11, 2004 - Available in 7 sizes, Model RS4 drive nut is configurable for vertical or horizontal travel. Smooth shaft has no threads and operates at rotational speeds to 10,000 rpm. Linear travel speed ranges from 0.5–4.0 ft/sec depending on drive size and payload weight, and RS4 drive offers axial thrust from 22–449 lb. Rolling ring bearings have constant, single-point contact with drive shaft, resulting is zero play when shaft is rotated.

Linear Drive has Zero Backlash and Jam-Proof Design

Aston, PA, November 2004 -- As an alternative to screw-based linear drive systems, Uhing Company has introduced the Model RS4 drive nut for OEM designers who require smooth backlash-free linear motion. Available in seven sizes to meet varying payload and linear speed requirements, the RS4 nut is configurable for vertical or horizontal travel. Shaft rotational speeds may be up to 10,000 rpm -- depending on the size of the drive nut. Linear travel speed ranges from 0.5 ft/sec up to 4.0 ft/sec again depending on the size of the Uhing drive and on the weight of the payload. RS4 drives offer axial thrust from 22 lbs to 449 lbs.

Specially machined Uhing rolling ring bearings are installed under pressure inside the drive. There is constant single-point contact between the bearings and the drive shaft. The result is zero play when the shaft is rotated -- even during reversal. Anti-backlash solutions such as preloaded nuts or double enveloping gears are not required.

As components in a variety of positioning and reciprocating linear motion systems, Uhing drives meet many linear motion application requirements including material handling machines, winding equipment, various test and measurement devices, parts transfer systems and in packaging machines. The only maintenance required to keep Uhing rolling ring drives running smoothly is periodic, light lubrication of the shaft.

The shaft in an RS4 rolling ring system is smooth. There are no threads where dirt and debris can become trapped. Therefore the system will not clog or jam nor is there a need to stop the system to clean the shaft. Designing in a protective bellows assembly is not necessary which helps make machine design faster and less expensive. The smooth shaft in a Uhing assembly also provides built-in overload protection. If the system is overloaded, the shaft simply slips instead of churning and grinding.

When integrated with a linear scale, proximity switches or other stroke measuring or limiting devices, Uhing RS4 linear drives provide smooth movement with accuracy subject to the types of controls being used. Amacoil application engineers can assist with size selection using proprietary software. A product video is available as well as a brochure with technical details such as mechanical drawings and product specifications.

Amacoil is the exclusive North American value-added distributor for Uhing and provides Uhing drives separately or in custom assemblies.
