TI Introduces Wideband, Voltage-Controlled Amplifier with Exceptional Gain Adjust Range for High Performance Signal Processing
DALLAS (October 21, 2004) – Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced a wideband, voltage-controlled amplifier from the company’s Burr-Brown product line. Featuring a continuously variable 80dB gain adjust range, +/-0.5dB gain accuracy, and a constant 35MHz signal bandwidth, the VCA810 provides a differential input to single ended output amplifier primarily used for analog signal processing in pulse or time domain systems. (See www.ti.com/sc04222.)
Typical applications for the VCA810 include optical receiver time gain control and distance measurement, sonar systems, voltage-tunable active filters, log amp functions and differential receivers.
“The VCA810 combines high-gain adjust range, low noise, high bandwidth and unmatched gain accuracy, making it ideal for pulse-oriented signal paths requiring a gain normalization prior to further processing,” said Michael Steffes, strategic marketing manager of TI’s high-speed signal processing group.
The amplifier operates from +/-5V supplies with low input voltage noise (2.4nV/rtHz), low supply current (24.8mA) and high output current (+/-60mA). Since the VCA810 offers a precisely trimmed dB/V gain adjust characteristic, AGC loops can use the gain control voltage as a received signal strength indicator with excellent accuracy. When the VCA810 is used to equalize varying channel loss, minimal change in group delay over gain setting will retain critical pulse edge information. An improved output stage provides adequate output current to drive the most demanding loads.
Available Today
The VCA810 is packaged in a SO-8 and is available now from TI and its authorized distributors. The device is priced at $5.75 in 1,000 piece quantities (suggested resale pricing). A companion product, VCA811, offers a wider 80MHz signal bandwidth and will be available in 1Q 2005.
