Power Modules feature 12 mm profile.

October 18, 2004 - Suited for low power applications, Power Modules in SP3 package offer minimum parasitic inductance, solderable pins for mounting to PCB, and base plate for thermal resistance. Current ratings range from 11–54 A at Tc=80°C for voltages of 500–1,200 V for MOSFET, FREDFET, and CoolMOS modules. Current ratings range from 10–50 A at Tc=80°C for voltages of 600–1,700 V for PT, NPT, and TRENCH IGBT modules. Applications include power factor correction, motor control, UPS, and welding converters.

APT Europe Introduces Very Low Profile (12mm) 41 X 73mm Power Modules

Bordeaux, France….. Advanced Power Technology Europe, a leader in power module technology is pleased to announce a new product line of standard power modules in the SP3 package for low power applications. The very low 12mm profile offers minimum parasitic inductance, solderable pins for easy mounting to a top Printed Circuit Board and a base plate for good heat spreading and best thermal resistance. These modules are offered in full bridge, dual Buck and dual Boost configurations.

The emitter/source bottom switches are open connections which makes possible the implementation of current sense devices. The symmetrical design allows connecting the two legs of the full bridge (or the two independent Boost / Buck circuits) in parallel to achieve a phase leg or a Boost/Buck chopper of twice the current capability.

These modules are offered with FREDFET switches for the full bridge modules, standard MOSFETs for Buck and Boost devices and also Coolmos™ , NPT, PT and TRENCH IGBTs.

Current ratings range from 11A to 54A @ Tc= 80 Deg. C for voltages in the range of 500V to 1200V for MOSFET, FREDFET and CoolMOS modules. Current ratings range from 10A to 50A @ Tc= 80 Deg. C for voltages in the range of 600V to 1700V for PT, NPT and TRENCH IGBT modules.

Key features:

• Very low profile (12mm) - same as Isotop® height

• Very low inductance for high efficiency at elevated switching frequencies

• Small 40.8mm x 73.4mm footprint

• Solderable terminals – easy PCB mounting

• Wide range of technologies available - MOSFETs, FREDFETs, NPT, PT and TRENCH IGBTs

• Wide range of voltage and current ratings

• Space and cost savings

• Isolated package – easy mounting to heat sink

The product family can be easily modified to provide asymmetrical bridges (Buck + Boost in the same package). This new SP3 package is also available to fit any other electrical configuration requiring very low profile, minimum weight and enhanced electrical and thermal performance.

Applications

The use of the latest generation Power MOS 7® MOSFETs , FREDFETs and PT IGBTs allows operating in hard switching mode in the range of 100 kHz to 200 kHz and above in resonant mode. For lower frequency applications NPT and Trench IGBTs are a preferred choice.

Primary applications for this extended family are power factor correction, motor control, UPS, power supplies and welding converters.

The very low profile offering low parasitics makes this product range a component of choice anytime and everywhere space, electrical performance, weight and cost are a concern. An overview of the new SP3 product range is given in the table below but more products are available on the website. Dual Buck choppers are available with the same ratings and technologies as the dual Boost choppers with DSK reference in the part number instead of DDA.

Data sheets are available to assist the designer, describing the features and benefits of these new devices in greater detail.

These may be downloaded from APT’s website at http://www.advancedpower.com or obtained from the factory.
