Standalone 2-Cell Li-Ion Battery Charger Controller Delivers up to 4A in Just 4cm²

MILPITAS, CA - September 30, 2004 - Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC4002-8.4, a high efficiency standalone switch-mode battery charger controller that can charge a 2-cell 8.4V Li-Ion battery at a high rate without compromising board space for heat dissipation. For safety and autonomous charge control, the LTC4002-8.4 includes features such as automatic shutdown, battery preconditioning, battery temperature sensing an end-of-charge indicator and a 3-hour charge termination timer. This standalone charger is offered in two packages: a 3mm x 3mm DFN and an 8-lead SO. The complete solution size is only 2cm x 2cm. The LTC4002-8.4 is beneficial in applications such as handheld medical devices, industrial and communication test equipment as well as charging docks, tablet PCs and battery backup systems.

The LTC4002-8.4 is a high efficiency current mode PWM controller with 500kHz switching frequency. It drives an external P-channel MOSFET for delivering charge currents as high as 4A with efficiencies up to 90%. The output voltage is set for the final float voltage of 8.4V with ±1% accuracy; with charge accuracy of ±5%. Futhermore, the device operates from a wide selection of wall adapters ranging from 9V to 22V.

The LTC4002-8.4's fast operating frequency and current mode architecture allow the use of small inductors and capacitors when compared to hysteretic topology chargers. The IC's constant switching frequency minimizes noise and filtering needs. Moreover, this battery charger is stable with all types of output capacitors including low ESR ceramic capacitors. An internal comparator detects the end-of-charge current and integrated timer sets the total charge time and terminates the charge cycle after 3 hours. The LTC4002-8.4 automatically enters sleep mode, dropping the battery drain current to 10uA.

The LTC4002-8.4 is guaranteed for operation from -40ºC to 85ºC. Pricing starts at $1.90 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
