Original Press Release:

Designed Adhesives from Tyco Plastics & Adhesives Allow Excellent Bonding to Ether Foam and Other Materials

New double-coated adhesives provides bonding solution for a variety of uses

PRINCETON, N.J. (Sept. 22, 2004) - Tyco Plastics & Adhesives, a Tyco International company (NYSE: TYC), introduces the 3189 Series and 3474 Series, two new lines of double-coated adhesive tapes that bond well to a variety of substrates, most notably ether foam. They are designed to bond dissimilar materials. For applications involving ether foams, uses include cushioning, acoustical absorption, vibration damping, equipment and devices for the medical and industrial markets, and automotive interior assembly. Very popular in the automotive segment, these product lines meet the adhesive requirements of several major automotive performance specifications.

Manufactured in Middlesex, N.J., by Tyco Adhesives, a business unit of Tyco Plastics & Adhesives, the new lines of designed adhesives offer superb bonding to ether foam, which traditionally has been difficult to bond to due to its open-cell structure. Used to bond HVAC, trim, weatherstopping and gasket materials in a wide variety of conditions, both the 3189 Series and 3474 Series provide a pressure-sensitive backing for ether, ester and low-perm urethane foams, as well as other metal and plastic materials. The ether foam-bonding adhesives offer excellent temperature and humidity performance and feature a Kraft paper liner coated on both sides, allowing for easy release and application.

"Ether foams are very popular in fabrication since they are soft, flexible and highly resilient," said Elizabeth Curran, marketing manager for the Specialty Tape Group (STG) of Tyco Adhesives. "Combined with their low cost, good cushioning properties and availability in a variety of densities and colors, ether foams are very attractive but known to be difficult to bond to. With our new lines of ether-bonding adhesives, we are introducing a proven bonding solution that meets our customers' needs."

The acrylic adhesive on one side (air side) bonds well to most ether, ester and polyurethane foams, while the rubber adhesive on the other side (liner side) bonds well to a variety of materials including low energy surfaces. The carrier consists of a 0.5 mil clear polyester film.
