OPTEK Introduces Low Drive Current VCSEL For Long Distance Sensing Applications
OPTEK’s OPV232 offers high thermal stability for low power consumption apps...
CARROLLTON, TX (September 21, 2004) — TT electronics OPTEK Technology recently introduced a low drive current vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) for long distance sensing applications. Designated the OPV232, the 850nm VCSEL is available in a low cost plastic T-1 package and features a dome lens that creates a narrow 3-degree beam angle.
VCSEL technology offers many advantages in sensing applications when compared to infrared LEDs. The OPV232 VCSEL requires substantially lower drive currents to obtain the same amount of output power as LEDs, enabling the device to be used in low power consumption applications such as battery operated equipment.
“At OPTEK, we are constantly striving to offer our customers a variety of VCSEL options to affordably accommodate every application,” said Gary Cawley, OPTEK Technology Business Development Manager for Optical Components. “The OPV232 is available in a low cost plastic package and long distance applications benefit from its narrow beam angle because it eliminates the need for secondary optics, thus reducing the total system cost.”
The 3mm OPV232 VCSEL is well suited for position sensing applications such as photoelectric sensors, optical encoders, light curtains, office equipment and industrial systems. The OPV232 is optically and spectrally compatible with OPTEK’s standard detector products such as phototransistors, photodarlingtons and photodiodes.
The OPV232 features superior electrical characteristics with a maximum forward peak current of 30mA and reverse voltage of 5V. The maximum operating temperature range for the VCSEL is –40ºC to +85ºC and the T-1 package offers a low profile height of 3mm.
Typical pricing for the OPV232 VCSEL is $5.06 each in quantities of 1K and lead times are from stock to 8 weeks.
