CAD/CAM Software supports trochoidal and plunge machining.

July 28, 2004 - TopSolid/Cam 2005 can pilot all complex multi-axis machines, including full dynamic simulation. It allows manufacturing of parts with undercut areas, and enables removal of material left by helicoidal cycle in areas where material to be removed is vertical. Unnecessary toolpaths can be removed in any direction in which operator works. Program automatically calculates adequate profile of revolution for turning operations with non-cylindrical elements.

TopSolid/Cam 2005

Missler Software, number 2 CAD/CAM supplier in France and number 7 worldwide (according to CIMdata Inc., an independent research company), is getting ready to release TopSolid 2005 in the last trimester of 2004.

This new version is a very powerful CAD/CAM solution, with particularly innovative functionalities available from TopSolid’Cam.

TopSolid’Cam 2005 offers improvements in the following areas:

•Machining Techniques:

– Trochoidal and plunge machining are now available:

Trochoidal machining involves movement of the tool in smaller circles which allows larger depths of material to be removed thus maximising the useful length of the tool. Trochoidal machining with TopSolid’Cam works in both 2D and 3D and is an important machining technique where large depths of material need to be removed.

– Plunge machining is used to rough out very deep material. It is a machining technique carried out by vertical drilling and its purpose is to remove layers of material by plunging into the work piece. Plunge machining results in the more efficient removal of material and longer tool life.

• Scallop Height Management – In order to speed up machining times the maximum scallop height will be maintained by adjusting the stepover between passes. The software should calculate the proper step-over to develop the shortest possible NC code and fastest machining cycles.

Some systems that allow scallop height control calculate the smallest stepover requirement on the entire surface. They produce overly large NC files, wasted tool motion, and increased machining time.

TopSolid’Cam 2005 offers the operator a 40% reduction in machining time through the determination of the correct scallop height required.

• TopSolid’Cam 2005 allows the removal of left material by an helicoidal cycle in areas where material to be removed is “vertical”

• Tool path edition – TopSolid’Cam 2005 enables the removal of unnecessary toolpaths in any direction in which the operator works. This allows to operator to delete toolpaths which he feels are not useful very quickly without recalculating all toolpaths. This can be very useful in operations where the fastest and most efficient machining process involves removing the toolpath at the end of the operation rather than recalculating the limiting contour.

• UnderCut machining in Z-level – TopSolid’Cam 2005 allows the manufacturing of parts with undercut areas. This is very useful in the aeronautics and rubber mold fields.

• Swarf machining with synchronization points or different element numbers. This function allows the operator determine the shape required through the selection of varying synchronization points.

• Tool visualization by simply moving the mouse – This is a hugely important innovation which allows the operator visualise and determine the necessary tool path. This is essential where the tool operates between 2 parts of a work piece which are located very close to each and the subsequent risk of collision is high.

• Automatic turning revolution shape calculation - Where a turning operation works on a part with non-cylindrical elements the operator needs to calculate the adequate profile of revolution. TopSolution’Cam 2005 automatically defines this for the operator.

• Chronogram improvements – The traditional chronogram option to allow simultaneous machining operations has been further improved to:

– Manage operations by turrets, spindles or by canals.

– Dynamically zoom in the chronogram

– Begin simulation where desired and thereby the operator is not obliged to begin simulation right from the beginning.

• Complex machines and Mill/Turn – TopSolid’Cam 2005 shows its superiority being able to pilot all complex multi-axis machines, including full dynamic simulation and allowing operations to be changed at any time according to user’s needs.

• Andrea Head – Allows turning operations to be carried out on milling or boring machines thus allowing for the creation of non-cylindrical shapes.

TopSolid’Cam 2005 is an innovative TopSolid module with many of its new new functionalities coming directly from customer requests. It is fully integrated with the TopSolid CAD software and is clearly recognised as a world leader in the CAM field. Today, more than 8000 users around the world are using TopSolid.
