X-Ray Inspection Modules automate failure analysis.

July 23, 2004 - Inspection modules qfp|module and mlf|module eliminate need for operator to determine pass/fail criteria. Each module provides critical features that measure QFP solder joints found on flat ribbon, L, gull wing lead components, and fine pitch of micro lead frame devices. Each module is based on open algorithm image analysis software, XEČ. The qfp|module covers all inspection criteria as detailed in IPC-A-610C standard. Products suit PCBA assemblers and IC packaging companies.

phoenix|x-ray Introduces New Automated Software Inspection Modules to Enhance and Automate Measurement and Failure Analysis

San Jose, CA (July 14, 2004) - phoenix|x-ray Systems + Services Inc., innovator of the first commercially available nanofocus x-ray system and first fully automated failure analysis system, today introduced at Semicon West 2004 two powerful software modules for their line of x-ray inspection systems, the qfp|module and mlf|module. The optional modules can be purchased with any x-ray system and are ideal for PCBA assemblers and IC packaging companies.

Both the qfp|module and the mlf|module are fully automated measurement solutions and eliminate the need for an operator to determine pass/fail criteria. Each module provides critical features that measure QFP solder joints found on flat ribbon, L, gull wing lead components and fine pitch of micro lead frame devices (MLF). Each module is based on phoenix|x-ray's new open algorithm image analysis software, XEČ (X-ray image Evaluation Environment). This new software environment creates a
flexible development infrastructure and allows phoenix|x-ray to quickly offer automated measurement routines for non-typical interconnections, new package types, and customer-specific applications.

With the release of these new automation tools, both software modules dramatically increase automated inspection capabilities and defect coverage beyond current standards for off-line x-ray equipment. The new qfp|module covers all inspection criteria as detailed in the internationally applied IPC-A-610C standard. The software detects, evaluates and indicates failed solder joints including: quality of heel fillet, side and toe fillet, bridges and electrical clearance, opens, side overhang, joint width and toe overhang, lead footprint, co-planarity and voiding percentage. With the increasing usage of micro lead frame devices (MLF), the mlf|module offers quick and repeatable measurements of shorts, voids, opens, misregistrations, and mis-shapes and is easily adapted to various land-lead configurations of this type of device package.

As part of a fully automated production floor or integrated into manufacturing systems, both modules can store the defect images and detected defects recorded to a local or network drive. These stored records can then be retrieved at a rework or quality inspection station using phoenix|x-ray's new quality|review
software. This software streamlines and simplifies the process of reviewing defects in an automated inspection environment by displaying the original X-ray image and classification from the stored record and indicating the position of the defect in an X-ray map of the sample, thereby reducing review time and operator error. In addition, the software modules offer easy data management and sample identification by its serial number.

Price and Availability
Available for any phoenix|x-ray system, the qfp|module and mlf|module are priced as low as $3,000 each and deliverable within four to six weeks.
