Tempilº honors America’s birthday with Red, White & Blue Tempilstiksº

The classic temperature indicators go patriotic for a Fourth of July limited edition. Some boxes are good for prizes

In a summertime promotion around the Fourth of July, Tempilº, an Illinois Tool Works Company, is honoring the flag, manufacturers and the welding industry of America - and thanking its customers - with colorful red, white and blue packaging for its classic temperature indicators. For a limited time, Tempilstikº holders will be a patriotic sky-blue with bright red and white markings. The summertime promotion is built around the Fourth of July.

Tempilº has been in business for sixty-six years. Since 1969 it has occupied the same quarters in South Plainfield, NJ, producing and improving a wide range of Tempilstiksº and other fusible temperature indicators which are sold as sticks, liquids, and self-adhesive labels, as well sterilization inks and a variety of industrial coatings. Shannon Reading, General Manager, and Promathesh Desai, Sales Manager lead the company for the Tempilstik product line.

The Tempilstikº, the company’s original product, is the world’s most trusted, accurate surface temperature indicator. It came into being in 1938 as Harry Blumberg, a metallurgist and the company’s founder, worked to develop better ways to fabricate submarine hulls for the U.S. Navy. It is still used to determine the correct temperature for welding submarine hulls, and in thousands of other applications where temperature control is critical and gauges or electronics are inconvenient or otherwise undesirable.

For best reliability, welding must be done at the optimum temperature. Blumberg experimented with chalk-like organic compounds of known melting points. Melting point - the temperature at which the phase change from solid to liquid occurs - is a physical property occurring every time the exact temperature is reached. Phase-change temperature indicators are not influenced by external factors like static electricity, ionized air, time, humidity - or being dropped on the floor - that may cause electrical and electronic instrumentation to function erratically. The melting point never needs calibration.

The fruit of Harry Blumberg’s research is today’s Tempilstik.

In welding applications, the Tempilstikº is used like a crayon to create a mark. The mark melts to show when the required welding temperature is reached. The sticks are produced in more than 100 temperature ratings, all the way up to 2,500º F (and up to 1200 C in the Celsius scale).

In addition to welding, heat forming and heat treating applications, Tempilstiksº are used in fields as varied as Formica laminating, hot air balloon fabrication, auto racing, pharmaceuticals manufacture, well drilling and forest bio control. They are also employed to check brake safety on metro subway systems and the Amtrak rail system.

Tempilstiksº are available in sturdy holders engineered for smooth operation, comfort and convenience. Now, for a limited time, these sturdy holders will be a patriotic sky-blue with bright red and white markings.

Tempilstiksº are packaged ten to a box. As an added “thank-you†to Tempil’s customers, some of the boxes will contain a card to be exchanged for either a Tempil T-shirt or an embroidered Tempil baseball cap. Batter up! The Tempil team comes to the plate for the classic American holiday!

Background

Among company successes is a factory which holds ISO 9001; 2000 certification; an ongoing R&D operation with a dozen patents issued or pending; and an excellent safety record. Tempilº is part of the Illinois Tool Works success story of companies working together to provide complete welding solutions and other manufacturing and professional supplies.
