June 17, 2004 - Model MMQ50 utilizes solid-state quartz MEMS inertial rate sensors and silicon MEMS accelerometers. Powered by ±8 Vdc supplies and consuming 4 W, unit features full 6° of freedom sensing capability and internal microprocessor that thermally compensates sensors. Suited for stabilization or guidance and control applications, device outputs serial RS-644 digital signal data stream comprising angular velocities and linear accelerations about 3 orthogonal axes.

Miniature MEMS Quartz Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) Ideal For Embedded Applications

Light Weight, Low Power Consumption and Small Form Factor Creates Versatile System Solution

Concord, Calif. – June 7, 2004 - BEI Systron Donner Inertial Division (SDID), a division of BEI Technologies, Inc., has introduced a new, miniature MEMS Quartz Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) utilizing solid-state quartz MEMS inertial rate sensors and silicon MEMS accelerometers. In response to today’s requirements for a small size, moderate performance IMU, the new Model MMQ50 can be incorporated into either stabilization or guidance and control applications in missiles, aircraft and unmanned vehicles (UAV/UGV). Ideally suited for embedded applications, its small size, lightweight design and low power consumption (4 watts) provide advantages for gimbaled or flight control applications requiring a small form factor demonstrating these characteristics.

The MMQ50 IMU employs three of its patented GyroChip® rate sensors, a mature design which uses double-ended quartz tuning fork technology. These sensors are built on BEI SDID’s high volume MEMS automotive production line. BEI SDID is a world-leading supplier of MEMS rate sensors, having shipped over 9,000,000 to date – and currently producing in excess of 10,000 per day. Each rate gyro channel is mated with a military qualified and proven ASIC. The MMQ50 uses high performance low cost silicon MEMS accelerometers that offer outstanding performance and is adaptable to a wide variety of applications requiring guidance, navigation and control.

The MMQ50 IMU offers substantial performance for a very attractive price. It features a full six degree of freedom (6DoF) sensing capability in an extremely compact size. It has a volume less than 5 cubic inches and weight less than 5 ounces.

The IMU is powered by a +/- 8Vdc supplies. The internal microprocessor thermally compensates the inertial sensors to minimize thermal errors. The unit outputs a low voltage serial RS-644 digital signal data stream comprising angular velocities and linear accelerations about the three orthogonal axes. These are in delta velocity (DV) and delta theta (Dθ) format. The MMQ50 is now in production and available.
