Caterpillar Releases New Utility Asphalt Compactors

PEORIA, Ill. - Caterpillar Inc. announces the addition of the CB-214E, CB-224E and CB-225E Asphalt Compactors to its product line. With the introduction of the CB-214E, CB-224E and CB-225E, Caterpillar strengthens its line of vibratory asphalt compactors. These new utility-sized models complement the Cat high-production asphalt rollers, the CB-434D, CB-534D, CB-534D XW and CB-634D. In addition, they share many features, possess a strong resemblance and have the same operating characteristics available on the intermediate-sized machines, the CB-334E and CB-335E, which will release in early 2004.

The CB-214E is a double drum with a 1000 mm (39") compaction width. It has an operating weight of 2450 kg (5,400 lb). The CB-214E is well suited for rental customers and contractors or agencies that maintain streets, roads, alleys or are adding paths to parks and recreation areas. In these applications, the tight turning radius and easy maneuverability make it a perfect match.

The CB-224E also is a double drum and has a compaction width of 1200 mm (47"). It has an operating weight of 2630 kg (5,800 lb). The high amplitude and width give the CB-224E the capacity to achieve a tons-per-day production rate that make it an excellent match for shoulders, small parking lets, lane additions or other similar sized jobs.

The CB-225E is provides more versatility because of its combi configuration. The CB-225E has a 1200 mm (47") wide drum at the front, and the rear end is equipped with four smooth tires. It has an operating weight of 2300 kg (5,070 lb). The combi roller can take the place of two compactors by providing the benefits of both a vibratory and a pneumatic compactor.

All three new models are powered by three cylinder Caterpillar 3013C diesel engines that provide a gross power of 24.4 kW (32.7 hp). The engine is liquid cooled and operates at 2,800 rpm. The engine meets U.S. Tier 2 emissions regulations.

The hydrostatic propel system provides smooth starts and stops, helping ensure a flawless mat. The hydrostatic propel system also provides service braking. A brake interlock prevents the machines from being propelled while the brakes are applied.

All three models have a high-frequency vibratory system that generates 63 Hz (3,780 vprn). The CB-214E and CB-224E provide three vibratory modes, front drum only, rear drum only (optional) or both drums. With their high centrifugal force, frequency and amplitude, the CB-214E and CB-224E can reach density requirements in only a few passes. The drums have a pod-style housing that encloses the fixed eccentric weight.

These new models provide a comfortable and convenient operating environment that contributes to the versatility of the machines. The operator's station provides plenty of leg room.

The CB-200 E-Series machines are equipped with a sliding station as standard equipment. The sliding station includes a bucket seat. The sliding station can be equipped with an optional suspension seat that provides fore and aft, height and weight adjustments.

The sliding station moves from side to side providing excellent visibility to drum or tire edge contact points. The station locks into three positions; right side, left side and center. The station is easy and convenient to slide. To move the station, the operator pulls upward on a pin located on the right side of the seat. Once the spring-loaded pin is pulled upward, the station can be slid and locked into one of the three positions.

The sliding station arrangement is designed with heavy-duty components that will provide a long and reliable life. Two 25 mm (1") diameter solid steel rails running across the width of the machine support the station. One rail is positioned at the front of the seat and the other at the rear. Two large nylon bearings are attached to each rail. The nylon bearings allow the seat to slide back and forth on the rails.

The propel lever is positioned in front of and to the right of the arm rest. This location allows the operator to lay his/her arm on the armrest and comfortably control the machine speed and direction.

The engine cover slopes downward, away from the operator, enhancing forward visibility and visibility in turns. In fact, the operator has visibility to objects that are 0.58 m (1.9') high and 1 m (3.3') n front of the machine. Rear visibility is even better. The operator can see objects that are 0.35 m (1.1') behind the machine and flush to the surface. The machines have a high curb clearance, allowing them to work along vertical obstructions.

These new models are simple to operate, allowing the least experienced crew member to operate them. These models make a perfect fit for rental stores. The instrument panel incorporates a cluster of warning lights, a fuel gauge and a service hour meter in order to easily verify the status of the machine systems. The ignition switch includes an engine pre-heat feature that assists engine start-up in cold weather. The instrument panel can also be protected with a lockable cover to prevent vandalism.

In addition, the machines are quiet for the operator and spectators. The quiet environment helps enhance productivity because the operator works in a comfortable atmosphere that lends itself to high-quality results. In addition, the low sound levels make these new machines a perfect match for commercial jobs when compaction must coincide with day-to-day business operations.

Four rubber isolation mounts on the base of the operator's platform have been improved to help increase comfort. The isolation mounts lower engine vibration transmitted to the operator's station which in turn decreases both operator fatigue and vibration transmitted to gauges and indicators.

The pressurized water spray system allows water to be sprayed over the drums. Spray modes are constant, off or intermittent. The intermittent mode conserves water and is useful on cool days or cooler mixes. The system is fed by a 150 L (39 gal) polyethylene water tank that is located under the operator's platform. An optional 70 L (18.5 gal) water tank is also available for increased capacity to 220 L (58 gal).

Each drum is fitted with two adjustable, spring-applied scrapers that are retractable. The scrapers are positioned at the front and rear of each drum. They help remove material on the drum surface. On the CB-225E, each tire is fitted with a replaceable, adjustable scraper. The scrapers help clean asphalt or soil off the tires.

The pressurized tire wetting system allows a solvent to be sprayed on the tire surfaces, helping prevent asphalt from adhering to the tires, available for the CB-225E only. One spray nozzle is positioned above each tire. The system is fed by a 70 L (18.5 gal) tank.

These new models incorporate the time-saving serviceability features that you have come to expect from Caterpillar. The engine enclosure easily lifts up and locks into place. External engine components, hydraulics and routine service points are clustered in easy-to-access locations.

Many Daily Visual Maintenance (DVM) points can be checked with a quick glance. For example, the air cleaner contains a restriction indicator can be verified visually. Hydraulic oil level is checked with a sight gauge. Engine oil level is checked visually with a dip stick. The fuel system water separator is checked visually

Routine maintenance points, such as the circuit breakers, fuel tank fill, fuel filter, oil fill, radiator fill, air cleaner filters, priming pump, hydraulic filter, and hydraulic oil fill, are grouped and can be accessed easily.

Most lubrication intervals are enhanced with the use of extended-life products. For instance, the engine oil only needs to be changed every 500 hours, and the hydraulic oil should be changed every 1,000 hours or once a year. The change interval for the vibratory system bearing lubrication is every 3 years or 3,000 hours. The drum drive shaft never needs to be lubricated.

Environmentally friendly drainage of hydraulic oil and engine oil is possible with remote-mounted valves and drain hoses. In addition, the valves can be opened by hand, no tools are needed. The steering cylinder and the articulation hitch grease fittings are easily accessible.

Other features that make servicing these machines simple include leak-resistant 0-ring face seal hydraulic fittings. Pressure test ports provide simplified monitoring of hydraulic systems. Hydraulic hoses are held neatly in place with mechanical blocks. The blocks separate hoses in order to ensure that they do not rub on one another, and when hoses are replaced, the blocks provide a placeholder for mechanics to secure new hoses.

The 12-volt electrical system uses one maintenance-free Cat battery. The battery provides 650 cold cranking amps. All electrical wiring is color-coded and numbered, and nylon-braided wrap and all-weather connectors ensure system integrity.

Several optional attachments are available, allowing customers to tailor machines to operator preferences or job specifications.
