Airgas Launches BIP® Pack, 12-Cylinder Packs, for High Volume Needs

RADNOR, PA - March 8, 2004 -- Airgas, Inc. (NYSE: ARG) launched today the new series of BIP® purifier technology (an Air Products innovation) gases in 12-cylinder BIP Packs while at the 2004 Pittsburgh Conference in Chicago, IL. BIP technology features a purifier train built directly into the cylinder, offering the benefits of a premium-grade gas at the overall cost of UHP-grade gas.

Airgas began offering BIP gases after acquiring the U.S. packaged gas business of Air Products in 2002. Now, Airgas is introducing BIP argon, helium or nitrogen gas to the U.S. in 12-cylinder packs, best suited to petrochemical, pharmaceutical and other analytical users with high-volume or central gas supplies.

"With this new 12-cylinder pack, users can enjoy the convenience of a single hook-up, eliminating the hassles associated with cylinder change out," said Steve Scheuring, marketing manager - specialty gases, Airgas, Inc. "This is yet another example of Airgas' commitment to offering the total solution to fit customers' needs. By partnering with Airgas, customers can be assured that they will find the gases they need, and a whole lot more."

According to Scheuring, traditional gas cylinders can introduce impurities into GC carrier and detector gases. "Impurities such as lubricants and solvents, moisture and oxygen, can cause a multitude of problems, including contamination, ghost peaks, stationary-phase bleed and poor resolution due to phase degradation," said Scheuring. "Traditional solutions to protecting analytical instruments from gas impurities, such as point-of-use purifiers are an incomplete solution, due to problems with performance, maintenance, leaks, safety and capital and labor costs."

BIP technology works by sealing a unique purifier inside a cylinder in a high-pressure, inert atmosphere. BIP purifier technology removes oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and halocarbons. Each purifier is tested and performance is guaranteed for the lifetime of the cylinder. BIP purifier technology features a bypass channel valve that incorporates a separate fill valve and an alternate bypass channel. It also features a check valve to protect the purifier from back flow and accidental contamination and a 0.5-micron frit to minimize particulate. A residual pressure valve that closes when the cylinder pressure drops below 60 psig so that no more gas can be withdrawn ensures that positive pressure is always maintained. This allows for users to get more product from each cylinder and ensures purifier integrity.

"The results speak for themselves," said Scheuring. "In a study conducted by Dr. Frank David at the Research Institute for Chromatography [Kennedypark 20, B-85 - Kortrijk, Belgium.], by using BIP gases, baseline stability was improved (20 percent lower background) and higher sensitivity was observed (30 percent increase in response). The result: longer column lifetime, reduced overall column labor and maintenance costs."
