APPLETON, Wis., March 9, 2004—Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has redefined the mid-frame, low speed diesel category with the introduction of its PRO 300 CC/CV engine-driven welding generator.
The PRO 300 features exceptional Stick pipeline arc performance, an 1800 RPM CAT diesel engine, a 20 to 410 amp multiprocess welding output (Stick, TIG, MIG, Flux Cored) and 12 kW of generator power. It weighs 1,100 lbs. (empty fuel tank), measures 32” H x 26” W x 56” D and has a list price of $9711.
“Miller now has the best machine in its class. Some folks may not know it yet, but that’s because they haven’t welded with a PRO 300. I Stick welded some 20 inch pipe, and that’s all it took for me to decide,” says Floyd East, a professional welder from Sulphur, La., with 25 years of experience. “I also like its light weight, excellent TIG arc and the fact that it has all the 120/240 VAC power I’ll ever need to run tools.”
While weighing nearly 300 lbs. less and measuring 35 percent smaller than a comparable DC generator, the PRO 300 provides a stronger welding output, offers 9,000 watts more generator power, uses 0.4 gallons/hour less fuel and runs about twice as quietly. Further, it provides Lift-Arc™ TIG arc starts suitable for code-quality welds on process pipe and a true CV output for excellent results with the flux cored wires used for structural steel.

True Pipe Machine
The acid test of any diesel engine drive is its downhill Stick arc on an open root joint with an EXX10 electrode. This is the situation encountered by cross-country pipeline welders, who are generally regarded as the most skilled operators. Considering that weld flaws can cost thousands of dollars to repair, and that these operators can only have so many rejects before tarnishing their reputation, they will not compromise on Stick arc performance.
To meet these needs, as well as those for structural steel, Miller engineered the PRO 300 with a four-position control that adjusts Stick arc force for EXX10 and EXX18 electrodes. Arc force is the amount of “drive” created at the end of the electrode that pushes the molten metal into the joint. Depending on the situation, operators want either “soft” or “stiff” arc characteristics.
For pipe welding with an E6010 electrode, Floyd East recommends setting the PRO 300’s process control the “C” Stick arc force position and setting the amperage control to match the diameter of the pipe.
“The PRO 300’s got good arc force, which means it produces a more uniform bead with good penetration and good tie-in,” says East. “With a Miller, I get less undercut and less chance of a hollow bead. The machine has a greater arc force to eliminate slag in the weld. Good arc force also helps me out if there’s a dirty bevel or I have to run a tight space. The PRO 300 also gives me consistent arc force throughout the day, which isn’t true of other machines.”
