Recorder identifies severe railcar hunting.

January 26, 2004 - Model RHD-2000 Railcar Hunting Detector identifies railcars that experience severe, low-frequency, lateral accelerations. Self-contained device incorporates accelerometer sensor, processing electronics, digital display, and battery. It mounts on inside or outside wall of railcar. Once activated, unit records whenever detector reaches any of 3 G-thresholds and counts amount of time hunting has occurred during particular shipment.

IST Recorder Identifies Severe "Railcar Hunting"

Instrumented Sensor Technology. Inc.'s (IST) new Railcar Hunting Detector, Model RHD-2000 is a low cost electronic device designed to identify railcars that experience severe "hunting" problems. "Hunting" is a motion phenomenon where by the railcar experiences severe, low frequency, lateral accelerations. Normally this condition is caused by wheel and track wear, track conditions and speed. Railcar hunting can often cause damage to products being shipped by rail as well as increase the risk of derailment.

In 2002, total costs for rail freight loss and damage claims (paid out) for all 9 US and Canadian reporting railroads exceeded $142 million. $50 million of this amount was due to derailment and related train accidents and $47 million to other causes such as shock and vibration, etc. Identifying railcars that are at risk can help railroads as well as shipping customers reduce damage, both to the railcars and to the products being shipped.

The RHD-2000 Hunting Detector is a small, self- contained device that incorporates an accelerometer sensor, processing electronics, a digital display and a battery. The device can be mounted on either the inside or outside wall of the railcar. Once activated the RHD-2000 starts recording whenever the detector reaches any of three G-thresholds. It then counts the amount of time hunting has occurred during a particular shipment. This time can then be displayed at the train's destination simply by pressing a button on the unit. The device can then be reset and re-used for up to the life of the battery, which is approximately two years. IST is the worldwide leader in providing data recorders for dynamic measurements.
