SI Systems Improves LO-TOW® Cart Systems with On-Board Intelligence, Ergonomic Interface

EASTON, Pa., Dec. 2, 2003 -- SI Systems, a world leader in the design, manufacture, and installation of horizontal transportation and automated order fulfillment solutions, today announced the availability of the SI Auto Height Cart, which adds onboard intelligence and automated ergonomic adjustment capabilities to the LO-TOW® in-floor towline cart to improve worker efficiency and reduce potential repetitive stress injuries.

The new technology incorporates radio frequency (RF) communication with a PLC controller on each towline cart to facilitate assembly workflow, and automatically adjust work to proper ergonomic settings. A worker logs into a workstation and records his/her ID, which stores his/her ergonomic information. An in-cart RF transmitter, which directs workflow through the plant, reads the ID and adjusts the incoming cart to the proper height and work position.

The Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations in York, Pa., has increased worker efficiency and reduced stress and/or lifting-related injuries by using the SI Auto Height Cart.
Manually adjusting the height and position of the carrier takes time and often doesn't get done properly. With the new system workers are more comfortable and able to work more effectively. LO-TOW® is an in-floor towline conveyor that moves carts through a distribution center or manufacturing facility using a powered chain installed into the floor and flush with the surface.
