New PowerCommand® 1160/1400 kW Gas Genset Features High Fuel Efficiency and Low Emissions

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Cummins Power Generation has developed a new
PowerCommand® lean-burn 1160/1400 kW natural gas generator set
series that features high fuel efficiency and low exhaust emissions. The new 60 Hz 1400 GQKA and the 50 Hz 1160 GQKA gas generator sets are ideal for a wide variety of on-site power applications such as utility peaking, distributed generation, or CHP (combined heat and power). Models are available with emissions levels of NOx (nitrogen oxides) as low as 0.7 g/bhp-hr.

"While these versatile new generator sets are very fuel efficient, special attention has been given to making them very clean as well," says Peter Hartzell, Executive Director - Energy Solutions, Cummins Power Generation. "The GQKA series complies with most North American and European emissions standards. It gives on-site power producers a significant technological advantage anywhere in the world, and adds to our line of gas generator products from 315 kW to 1.75 MW."

Each generator set features a 60-liter, 16-cylinder QSK60G series natural gas engine operating at either 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) or 1,800 rpm (60 Hz). The engine is based on the successful Cummins lean-burn gas engines manufactured at Daventry, UK, and incorporates a number of advanced electronic control systems, including full-authority electronic management of the engine, as well as systems that optimize electric power quality and performance of the generator set.

"Thousands of gas and diesel engines based on the basic QSK60 engine design are in the field, making this a thoroughly proven prime mover," says Hartzell. "That goes for the alternator and the PowerCommand control system too. Cummins is the only generator set manufacturer to provide full system integration and testing prior to shipment."

Another important feature of the GQKA series is that it has been designed for extended maintenance intervals. "Less required maintenance means lower operating expenses," says Hartzell. "In addition, because all the major components of the generator set - engine, alternator and control system - are designed, manufactured and tested Cummins technologies, customers can be assured of single-source responsibility. All of this is backed up with rapid service availability from more than 170 worldwide
distributors," he says.

The exclusive Cummins PowerCommand digital control system monitors, controls and protects the generator set under a wide variety of operating conditions. PowerCommand coordinates remote or local starting, stopping, and frequency synchronization in paralleling applications. The integrated AmpSentry Protection guards the electrical integrity of the alternator and power system from the effects of over-current, over/under-voltage, under-frequency and overload conditions.

For more than 80 years, Cummins Power Generation has been a major force in increasing the availability and reliability of electric power around the world. Its extensive global distributor network delivers innovative power solutions for any on-site power need -- from remote prime power systems, to emergency standby power for critical facilities, to clean, energy-efficient cogeneration systems that extend our natural resources.
