Applied Robotics, Inc. Introduces a Suite of Lab Automation Tools That Will Enable Robots for Lab Automation Applications
Automation Trend:
Tooling Products Enable Robots for Laboratory Applications
GLENVILLE, NY June 23, 2003 -- Applied Robotics, Inc. (ARI), a worldwide leader in automation accessories, has introduced a solution package that enables system integrators and end users to acquire the robotic tools necessary for laboratory automation applications. This application-specific function package presents the combination of robot end-effectors and essential accessories necessary for many key lab automation applications.
"Today's pharmaceutical and biotech laboratories need to produce results faster, more accurately and at a reduced cost. As a result, many lab automation users are looking to industrial automation suppliers for solutions. Experience in microchip and electronics applications, resulting in high throughput at a significant cost reduction, are directly applicable to the lab automation arena," said Jeff DePree, Vice President, Corporate Development, Applied Robotics, Inc. "For example, automating microplate handling already shows cost-effectiveness simply by looking at the increased volume of microplates that are able to be processed by one robot and a servo controlled gripper as compared to a manually attended solution. However, implementing flexible automation for a myriad of lab applications requires a suite of products designed to carry out a variety of tasks."
This suite of products, which includes servo and pneumatic grippers, microplate handling fingers, microplate hotels, tool changers and collision sensors, can be applied to the user's choice of motion systems, whether it is a robot arm, linear slide or other method of mobility. Modularity, compatibility and flexibility are features that allow these products to integrate with a variety of systems, and with each other. For example, ARI's Serial Servo Gripper is designed for an open architecture - no proprietary software or controller is needed, since it operates through commands issued by a Microsoft(R) Visual Basic program.
Some benefits of automating lab applications with ARI's new suite of products include acceleration of research and development processes, reduction of human errors, increased volume of sample tracking and improvement of sterile conditions.
