Robots are programmed/controlled from user’s PLC.

September 8, 2003 - Adept Cobra PLC600™ and PLC800™ robots combine SCARA robot with PLC Server that allows direct programming of robot from Allen-Bradley PLCs through DF-1 serial connection. Since PLC server integrates directly with existing PLCs, it enables plant-floor personnel familiar with PLCs to develop and support robot applications. Products are suited for part handling, packaging, and pick-and-place applications.

Adept Technology Introduces New Robots Controlled Directly From Allen-Bradley PLC

New Adept Cobra PLC600™ and Adept Cobra PLC800™ Robots Provide Simplified Integration with Direct Programming from Customer’s PLC

Livermore, California — September 2, 2003 – Adept Technology, Inc. (OTCBB: ADTK.OB), a leading manufacturer of flexible automation for the semiconductor, electronics, fiber optic, telecommunications, and life sciences industries, today introduced a new family of PLC-controlled robots to be shown at the Assembly Technology Expo September 23 - 25 in Chicago (booth#28063), IL. The new robot family combines a high-performance SCARA robot with a PLC Server that allows direct programming of the robot from the Allen-Bradley family of PLCs (PLC-5, SLC-500, Logix family), through a DF-1 serial connection. The initial robots in the family will include the 4-axis SCARA Adept Cobra PLC600™ and the Adept Cobra PLC800™.

“Connecting robots to a PLC is nothing new,” said Charlie Duncheon, executive vice president of Adept Technology. “What’s unique about the Adept Cobra PLC™ robot family is that the robots are programmed and controlled directly from the customer’s PLC. The user simply connects the Adept PLC server to their PLC and programs the robot directly from the PLC’s native programming environment. The Adept PLC server approach is unique in that no emulation of ladder logic is performed and no soft PLC is used - it is direct control of the robot by the PLC. This new robot product line will enable us to expand into markets where industrial robots were traditionally perceived as too complex to implement and maintain.”

Many employees on factory floors view robots as sophisticated machines requiring extensive knowledge and expertise to deploy. With the Adept Cobra PLC™ robots the entire application can be configured and programmed directly on the customer’s PLC. Because the PLC server integrates directly with existing PLCs, this enables plant-floor personnel familiar with PLCs to develop and support robot applications without being robot experts. This product is designed to be cost-effective and ideally suited for a wide range of part handling, packaging and pick-and-place applications.

Adept Technology designs, manufactures and markets factory automation components and systems for the fiber optic, telecommunications, semiconductor, automotive, food and durable goods industries throughout the world. Adept’s robots, controllers, and software products are used for small parts assembly, material handling and ultra precision process applications. Our intelligent automation product lines include industrial robots, configurable linear modules, flexible feeders, semiconductor process components, nanopositioners, machine controllers for robot mechanisms and other flexible automation equipment, machine vision, systems and software, application software, and simulation software. Founded in 1983, Adept is America’s largest manufacturer of industrial robots. More information is available at www.adept.com.
