UV Germicidal Irradiation System targets SARS in airstream.

July 21, 2003 - V-Flex™ high-intensity UV surface and air stream disinfection system offers 360 UVC irradiance, which targets microorganisms in moving airstreams. Product runs on V-Smart™ application software, which determines correct level of UVC needed to treat the target microbe. System demonstrated a predictive Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) disinfection rate of ~98% in 9,000 cfm air handling systems.

Altru-V™ First to Target “SARS” in Bejing, China

Valencia, California, June 1, 2003 – ALTRU-™, a division of UltraViolet Devices Inc. (UVDI) announced today the installation of large commercial Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation systems in two Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning systems to combat Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in a high-rise condominium located in Beijing, China.

Embassy House, a multistory complex owned and managed by Hines Properties, wanted a way to mitigate the potential spread of airborne viral contaminants in its pre-treatment make-up air systems. ALTRU-V specified V-Flex ™, a high intensity UV surface and air stream disinfection system featuring the needed 360 UVC irradiance. V-Flex is designed to deliver exceptional levels of UVC to targeted microorganisms in moving airstreams, in this particular application it was to mitigate the SARS virus from these large custom air handling systems.

According to Dave Witham, Vice President of New Technology for ALTRU-V, “We mathematically modeled the UV dosage applied to the system by applying such things as the U.V. lamps, CFM, cavity dimensions, air velocity, temperature and the target microbe. From that we were able to demonstrate a predictive SARS disinfection rate of approximately 98% in each of the 9,000 CFM air handling systems.”

The proprietary V-Smart ™ application software by ALTRU-V determines the correct level of UVC needed to treat SARS in a moving air stream. According to Witham, “Being able to model the effects of UVC on the SARS surrogate, is a clear demonstration of ALTRU-V’s commitment to applying science to the application of UVC in the treatment of critical care environments1”.

UVDI has a long history of disinfection in both water and air applications with a history that dates back to the 1940s. The V-Flex system was designed specifically for treating pathogens in a moving air stream, by providing the flexibility to easily add UV Modules, this allows for the delivering of the large amounts of UVC energy often necessary for such infectious microbes.

ALTRU-V is an ISO 9001 certified manufacturer and distributor of UVC assemblies for the commercial HVACR market. ALTRU-V products are available through factory trained and authorized representatives and distributors.

For additional information, contact: ALTRU-V, 28220 Industry Drive, Valencia, CA 91355. Phone (877) 787-3882; Fax (661) 295-8350.

ALTRU-V, V-Smart and V-Flex are trademarks of UltraViolet Devices, Inc. Fixtures are UL/C-UL Listed under Category Code ABQK UL standards.

1In critical care environments where UVC is being relied upon as the sole disinfection process, ALTRU-V recommends that independent bioassay testing be performed to validate the design of the individual system.
