Biocompatible Dielectric Material suits medical devices.

June 10, 2003 - High strength toughened fluoropolymer (HSTF), produced through manipulation of PTFE microstructure, offers scrape abrasion resistance, cut-through resistance, and dielectric strength of 1.4 kV/mil in pinhole free profiles as thin as 0.0005 in. Material can be applied over conductors as small as 50 AWG wire. Applications include electrophysiology products and other catheter-based products where space is limited and reliability is crucial.

Gore Offers Advanced Biocompatible Dielectric Material for Medical Devices

Elkton, Md. (June, 2003) W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc., a leading medical device and electronic components manufacturer, offers a high strength toughened fluoropolymer (HSTF) to the medical marketplace. This dielectric material is ideal for electrophysiology devices where reliability is critical and space is limited.

HSTF is an advanced biocompatible material produced by Gore scientists and engineers through manipulation of PTFE's microstructure. This process has led to a material with superior mechanical and electrical properties when compared to other fluoropolymers. This enhancement offers greater scrape abrasion resistance, cut-through resistance, high toughness for resisting dynamic loads, and high dielectric strength in ultra-thin, pinhole free profiles.

HSTF, as thin as 0.0005 in. (0.02 mm), can be applied over conductors as small as 50 AWG wire. This processing capability enables Gore to provide high performance wire and micro-cables to many demanding medical applications. The HSTF/conductor system dramatically increases strength and toughness through load sharing. The end benefits are added robustness and reliability for applications subject to high impulse forces, varying dynamics, or severe environments – typical in a variety of medical devices.

W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc. is a leader in providing high technology solutions for electronic, medical, industrial, and fabric applications. Headquartered in Newark, Delaware, Gore operates more than 45 facilities, has over a billion dollars in annual sales, and employs approximately 6,000 associates worldwide.
