Universal Testing Machine includes handheld controller.

March 27, 2003 - Hydraulically powered Super L UTM provides critical materials testing up to 600,000 lbf. Portable controller and LCD display enables handheld operation at load frame. It allows positioning of adjustable crosshead, prior to test, and opening and closing of optional hydraulically actuated grips. Testing software can be added for data acquisition and computer-assisted control of machine. Accuracy is within ±0.5% of indicated load from 0.2–100% of capacity.

New Super “L” Hydraulic UTM Series Developed by Tinius Olsen

Handheld controller comes standard for convenient testing and crosshead remote control.

For critical materials testing up to 3,000 kN, Tinius Olsen has introduced its next generation of Super “L” hydraulically-powered universal testing machines (UTMs). Many thousands of Super “L” machines are currently in use worldwide for tension, compression, transverse, and other tests on materials and assemblies. For basic manual testing, the new Super “L” models feature a portable controller and LCD display that enables convenient handheld operation at the load frame. It allows positioning of the adjustable crosshead, prior to the test, and opening and closing of the optional hydraulically actuated grips. A portion of the 3-line LCD reads force in either lbf, N, or kgf in 10 mm high numbers. In addition to displaying load, it can be optionally equipped with appropriate instrumentation and signal conditioners to display position and strain values. If the position instrumentation (high resolution encoder) and signal conditioning module are ordered, the speed will also be displayed. Another attribute of the new Super “L” designs is a space-saving console with a smaller footprint.

Every Tinius Olsen Super “L” machine features a patented dual-pressure hydraulic loading system and a rugged four-column construction for exceptional load frame rigidity.

A wide variety of testing software can be added to the Super “L” for data acquisition and for computer-assisted control of the testing machine (for machines equipped with optional servo control). As dependable as the basic manually-controlled Super “L” is, the rate at which load is applied is determined by the operator. Therefore, as an option, the Super “L” can be supplied with closed-loop servo control capability. This control system constantly monitors the test in progress and regulates the testing rate to maintain the preset conditions. This option enables users to conduct tensile, compression, flexure, and other tests requiring different control modes (e.g. crosshead speed to start, strain rate through yield, and back to crosshead speed to failure). This valuable closed-loop servo control option can also be easily added later as a field upgrade on the new Super “L” s.

Super “L” systems are guaranteed to meet ASTM, ISO, and other national and international specifications for accuracy. Accuracy is within +/-0.5% of the indicated load from 0.2% to 100% of capacity. All equipment used to calibrate the weighing and indicating systems of the Super “L” is traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Many capacities and configurations of the new Super “L” machines are available. For most users, the standard line covers requirements from 30,000 to 400,000 lbf (150 to 2,000 kN). For rapid sequence production testing, Models A and AF cover a capacity range of 30,000 to 200,000 lbf (150 to 1,000 kN) and feature open-front crossheads. For extraordinary testing, Tinius Olsen offers high capacity, and special purpose Super “L” models of 600,000 lbf (3,000 kN) and beyond. A wide range of options, especially special grips, crossheads, columns, and screws, enable Tinius Olsen to tailor a modular Super “L” precisely to user needs.
