Directed Light Offers Retrofits for Tactile Sensing Heads

SAN JOSE, CA -January 13, 2003- Directed Light is pleased to announce the availability of Precitec capacitive height-sensing retrofit packages for Mitsubishi, Mazak, Balliu, and other industrial cutting lasers with tactile sensing heads.

Conventional, tactile height-sensing heads have a device, (sometimes called a "spoon"), which rides on the surface of the workpiece and provides feedback to a device, thus maintaining nozzle height. Occasionally, a cut piece will flip out of position during processing, catch on the spoon, and either jam the cut piece into the work or damage the spoon itself, resulting in damaged goods or equipment, a hold up in production, and lower yield.

The Precitec retrofit is a non-contact capacitive height-sensing system, which eliminates scratching on the work surface, provides the ability to work with thinner materials, pierce the workpiece more quickly, and cut a wider variety of shapes. Retrofits bring older systems up to current laser cutting technology standards, adding years of life to "workhorse" industrial lasers and saving tens of thousands of dollars over the cost of replacing them. Retrofits can be installed in just 2 to 3 days and include training and documentation.
