Gearheads are suitable for powering robotic arm elbows.
December 6, 2002 - Type BDB gearhead substitutes rotating flange for output shaft, omitting torsional deflection. Maximum backlash offered in BDB is 5, 3, or 1 arc-min. Pancake style gearhead maximizes transmittable torque in short length. BDB series also includes hypertorque versions in various ratios from 3–110. Product family is offered in 7 diameters from 2.5–11.25 in. with torque ratings to 68,000 lb-in. Applications include rotating gears or capstans.

Traditional Low Backlash Planetary Gear drives have cylindrical output shafts commonly seen on most types of gearboxes. The new Mijno Type BDB gearhead substitutes a "rotating flange" for an output shaft. In addition to solving performance and cost issues, the new Type BDB geometry opens the door for unlimited creative design solutions.
Many motion control applications require minimum backlash and torsional deflection. Most of the torsional deflection of traditional gearheads is traceable to that inherent in the relatively long output shaft. Elimination of the shaft omits its torsional deflection, leaving the designer only the gear teeth backlash to consider. Maximum backlash offered in the BDB is 5, 3, or 1 arc-min.
Another advantage is that the rotating flange can often eliminate the cost and space associated with separate couplings that are often used to connect loads to gearheads.
Type BDB gearheads can be viewed as "pancake" style gearheads because their internal design concept maximizes transmittable torque in a short length. The BDB product family also features "hypertorque" versions in selected ratios. Cataloged ratios are 3 to 110 with higher ratios available.
The product family is offered in seven (7) diameters, from 64 to 285 mm (2.5 to 11.25 inches) diameter. Torque ratings to 7700 Nm (68,000 Lb-inches.)
Applications include powering the "elbows" of robotic arms, and rotating large gears or capstans. The BDB geometry is also a "natural" for high inertia indexing tables.
