Grove's RT9130E Gets Top University Grades

The new Grove RT9130E rough terrain crane is hard at work at Baylor University's Sue and Frank Mayborn Science and Cultural History Complex in Waco, Texas. Begun in March of this year, the $18.7 million museum project is scheduled for completion in 2003.

The Grove RT9130E is the largest rough terrain crane available at 130 tons (120 tonnes) lift capacity, 160 ft. (48.5 m) standard boom length and maximum tip height of 279 ft. (85 m). These new machines are now showing up at job sites across the country and are proving their worth on jobs such as this one. Joe Lindemann, Project Superintendent for general contractor BFW Construction Co., explained how the crane meets their specific needs: "There are a lot of tight areas on this job and we knew we needed a rough terrain crane for maneuverability. It is just too tough to maneuver a truck crane on many areas of the site where we are lifting rebar, forms and other materials. We also needed reach, and the Grove RT9130E was the only crane out there that would get us around the job in the tight spots and still give us the reach we needed."

BFW Construction has been in business for 38 years and specializes in educational, institutional and hospital projects and the Baylor University project is an excellent fit for them. Lindemann also noted "We rent cranes when we need them, and South Texas Equipment has done a good job of meeting our needs, especially with the RT9130E which does just what we need it to do. While we wanted a rough terrain unit for our particular requirements, the steel erector on the job is using a Grove GMK5120B all terrain crane. His site location and lifting requirements are a little different from ours and the AT works out just fine for his lifts. For us, this big new Grove RT has been perfect for our applications and I give it an A++."

The first public display of the RT9130E was in March of this year at CONEXPO. Operationally, it is the same as other Grove "E" series rough terrain cranes and, in fact, the cab and controls are common to all "E" series units making the switch from one to another simple. The cab on the RT9130E adds a 20° tilt feature which is a big help to the operator on high lifts. Acceptance of this new machine has been excellent as customers are finding application benefits for this long reaching 130 ton rough terrain crane.
