Arlington Press Adds New Cartoning Capacity; Acquires Copco UV Flexographic Press

VERNON, CA - September 2002 - Responding to increased demand for "one-stop" convenience in pharmaceutical product packaging, Arlington Press, an Impaxx company added carton production to its product line- A leading maker of package inserts and outserts, roll labels and specialty products for prescriptions, over-the-counter (OTC) medications and nutritional products, the company has been in continuous operation in New York since 1920, and more recently in Raleigh, North Carolina as well. Today it is one of the ten packaging operating units that comprise Impaxx, Inc.

A COMCO UV flexographic press is now operational in the newly-expanded Raleigh facility to produce individual folding cartons for bottles, blister packs, sample kits and point-of-purchase displays, according to Robin Henfling, president of Arlington Press.

"Pharmaceutical manufacturers increasingly want the convenience of having one vendor handle all packaging needs, including labels, inserts and cartons," Henfling says. "We are already set up for cGMP (current good manufacturing practices), and adding carton production is a logical step for us since we have the necessary operational instructions and work processes in place."

The new UV Flexo press is 22 inches wide with a print length of up to 32 inches. It can print on substrates ranging from 8 to 24 points at a maximum speed of 750 feet per minute. The press has 9 printing stations and is equipped with a gas dryer to allow rapid finishing of cartons with aqueous coatings. The COMCO unit also allows for rotary inline die cutting, eliminating the need for additional processing steps.

"This press lets us give customers advantageous turnaround times on cartons very cost-effectively because of its speed, quick setup time and the efficiency of having the die cutting process done in line," Henfling points out. In addition to cartons, the press can print heat-seal cards and coated stock for inserts.

To support the addition of carton production, the company has also installed a Bobst folding carton gluer that can run straight-line cartons at a rate of up to 100,000 per hour. The Bobst equipment has precise quality control devices that verify glue application on each carton and bar code scan both sides to ensure accuracy.

In 2001, Impaxx completed a 31,000 square foot expansion of the Raleigh facility, bringing manufacturing space to more than 60,000 square feet. Approximately 10 employees have been added to support the company's entry into carton production.

Currently, Impaxx, Inc. is in the midst of an ongoing program to invest in people, resources, products and services. The company has added 13 new sales associates and is investing $12 million in capital and related improvements at all levels of its business.

Founded in 1996, Impaxx is one of the nation's largest providers of integrated packaging components, offering customers solutions for multiple packaging component needs. Impaxx also manufactures and markets a leading line of high-speed label application equipment under its Trine Labelling and Label-Aire brands. The company employs 1,100 and has annual sales of approximately $200 million.
