October 10, 2002 - Telecentric Zoom 100 Optical System maintains telecentricity throughout its 10:1 magnification zoom range. Offering <0.1% manageable distortion resulting from varying perspective within field-of-view, it provides resolution of 56–560 lp/mm. Specimens can be measured over entire field-of-view without altering system's optics configuration. Offerings include computer-automatable zoom and focus functions and imaging and illumination accessories.

Revolutionary Telecentric Zoom Optical System Delivers Near Zero Distortion For Ultra-Precise Metrology Across A 10:1 Zoom Range

Rochester, New York, USA • September 16, 2002 – Specifically designed for the increasing precision requirements of metrology applications, Thales Optem introduces the revolutionary Telecentric Zoom 100 Optical System. This technology-defining Zoom Optical System maintains telecentricity throughout its entire 10:1 magnification zoom range. Simply stated, the Telecentric Zoom 100 offers <0.1% manageable distortion resulting from varying perspective within the field-of-view (i.e. parallax).

Telecentric Systems have a variety of quality- and alignment-specific applications within the automated manufacturing, inspection and high-tech arenas. Specimens can be precisely and reliably measured over the entire field-of-view, resulting in higher throughput and better quality control accuracy.

Until now, the metrology field has had to depend upon fixed telecentric systems with any number of auxiliary magnification lenses to perform optical measurement across variable fields-of-view or depths-of-field. With Thales Optem’s Telecentric Zoom 100, metrologists can now realize extremely accurate optical measurement over a 10:1 Zoom range without altering the optics configuration of the system… greater productivity and less human error. Then consider fully computer-automatable zoom and focus functions, and an array of imaging and illumination accessories, and enjoy a significant productivity and throughput boost.

A Telecentric cone of rays emanating from an object point remains perpendicular to the object plane across the entire field-of-view. In contrast, a conventional lens has cones, which are not perpendicular and thus produce parallax. Consider figure 1. With the Telecentric Lens, all three locations (A, B & C) will measure the same size. However, with the Conventional Lens, A, B & C will all appear the same size to the camera, but in reality, are all different sizes.
