Micro-Abrasive Blaster prepares surfaces on turbines.

August 23, 2002 - MicroBlaster removes material and performs exacting surface preparation on difficult to reach surfaces. It can be used with 25 or 50 micron abrasive media to blast air foils and reach down into 40 to 100 radial cooling holes of air foil. Micro-abrasive blasting removes oxide layer, and finely textures surface to further enhance chemical cleaning.

Comco Micro-Abrasive Blasters Make Quick Work of Surface Preparation on Turbines

One of the many advantages of micro-abrasive blasting is its ability to remove material and perform exacting surface preparation on difficult to reach surfaces. Comco, specialists in
micro-abrasive blasting, have perfected a process for precise reworking and maintenance of turbines.

Nickel based turbine blades are commonly coated with a variety of materials to ensure adequate protection from oxidation, wear and corrosion. When the turbines are in operation, oxide develops on the air foils and inside the radial cooling holes. As blades come in for rework, the old layer of coating must be removed before new protective coatings can be applied. Although some removal of the coating can be done with chemicals, a layer of oxide often interferes with complete removal of the coating.

This is where micro-abrasive blasting is at its best. In order to remove the oxidized layer, an operator can easily use a MicroBlaster with a 25 or 50 micron abrasive media to blast the air foils and reach down into the 40 to 100 radial cooling holes of the air foil. These holes are very small, typically .030" to .050" in diameter. Micro-abrasive blasting not only removes the oxide layer, but also finely textures the surface to further enhance chemical cleaning. In most cases, the oxide layer being removed is only .001" to .002" thick.

To learn more about micro-abrasive blasting and how it can be used for precision cleaning, cutting, deburring, surface preparation and material removal from a variety of surfaces, visit Comco's website at www.COMCOinc.com.
