Greif's Knock-Down Steel Drums Offer Production Flexibility with Drastically Reduced Transportation Costs

Innovative Nesting Process Results in Freight Savings
Visit Greif and Van Leer Industrial at Interpack 2002 - Hall 10, Stand D22/E21

Delaware, OH (April 24, 2002) - Multi-national food processors and oil producers can produce 30- and 55-gallon (115- and 216,5-litres) steel drums on demand with significantly reduced freight costs using "knock-down" steel drum technology from Greif Bros. Corporation, a global leader in industrial packaging. This product is also available through Greif's Van Leer Industrial Packaging business.

This type of steel drum is provided to customers in a pre-finished kit. As the customer needs drums, the knock-down kit is converted into a fully assembled drum through 4 easy steps: rounding the drum bodies, forming flanges and rolling hoops on the drum body, seaming the drum ends onto the drum body and testing the assembled drum. The equipment required for drum assembly is supplied, and Greif technicians install the equipment and provide support and maintenance.

A unique process of nesting the painted drum bodies conserves space for shipping large quantities of drum parts, maximizing the number of drums that can be delivered in standard ocean shipping containers. Using its unique nesting process, Greif can transport between 900 and 3,000 complete knock-down drum kits in a 40-ft. shipping container, saving over 90% in transportation costs when compared to fully assembled drums.

The knock-down drums are designed to meet individual customer requirements and specifications. Greif representatives meet with the customer to determine drum construction, cosmetic and performance requirements to design a custom container. Assistance is also provided in placing the assembly machinery in the most efficient location on the customer's production floor and providing training to customer employees in the safe operation of the equipment.

Ideal for use with food, purees, concentrates, tropical fruit, lubricating oils and chemical solids, Greif's knock-down steel drums ensure processors fill products in containers unharmed from outside storage or in-transit damage.

Greif specializes in developing application-specific industrial shipping container/packaging solutions, serving a wide range of large to small and multinational to local businesses around the world. In addition to steel drums, Greif provides plastic and fibre drums, intermediate bulk containers, closure systems, corrugated containers and other corrugated products, multiwall bags and containerboard.
