REMINDER: World Standards Week 2011 Is Less Than Two Weeks Away

Less than two weeks remain until members of the standards and conformity assessment community gather for World Standards Week 2011, to be held October 11-14 in Washington, DC.

Each year, WSW brings together members of the standards and conformity assessment community and leaders from all industry sectors to celebrate standardization and the critical role it plays in all aspects of commerce and everyday life.

ANSI-ESO Conference on Transatlantic Partnerships

In addition to the U.S.-oriented ANSI meetings, ANSI has organized a conference in conjunction with the European Standards Organizations (ESOs) to foster networking and an open dialogue on the use of standards and compliance programs in such areas as e-mobility/electric vehicles, energy, and security. Open to all interested stakeholders, the ANSI-ESO Conference will be held at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, October 12.

2011 ANSI Service and Leadership Awards

On the evening of October 12, the 2011 ANSI Annual Awards Banquet and Ceremony will pay tribute to the creativity, dedication, and vision of individuals who contribute to and participate in the U.S. and global voluntary standards-setting and conformity assessment activities. The reception will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Newseum's Knight Conference Center, with the awards ceremony and dinner to follow at 7:00 p.m.

Member Meetings and Legal Issues Forum

On October 13, WSW will play host to the ANSI member forum meetings and the Annual Business Meeting Luncheon, bringing ANSI's diverse members together to address strategic business issues facing the standards and conformance community and U.S. industry as a whole.

Another highlight of WSW, the ANSI Legal Issues Forum will examine legal and policy issues that may arise when patented technologies are included in voluntary consensus standards. The forum's first panel will address the pros and cons of the RAND licensing commitment and its continued viability as the preferred approach to deal with essential patented technology in standards. A second panel will address the pros and cons of mandatory or voluntary ex ante disclosure of licensing terms as a potential alternative to the RAND licensing model.

All ANSI member meetings and the Legal Issues Forum will be held at the Newseum's Knight Conference Center.

U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day and Exhibition

This year, the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day (WSD) - Advancing Safety and Sustainability Standards Worldwide - will recognize the crucial role of standards, codes, and conformity assessment in assuring the health and safety of people and the environment, today and for future generations. Organized by the WSD planning committee, the WSD reception, dinner, and ceremony will be begin at 5:30 p.m. on October 13 at The Fairmont Washington.

The week will close on October 14 with the World Standards Day exhibition on Capitol Hill. To RSVP, contact Dain Hansen (202-414-6177; dain.hansen@iapmo.org).

The WSD planning committee is co-chaired by NIST and ANSI, with the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) serving as the administrating organization for WSD 2011.
