wenglor Acquires MEL Mikroelektronik GmbH....Another Addition to the Product Portfolio of the Sensor Manufacturer Based in Tettnang
wenglor is expanding again: Since mid 2013, the Munich-based sensor and measuring system expert MEL Mikroelektronik has been part of wenglor sensoric GmbH based in Tettnang, Germany. With around 40 employees, the company brings more than 25 years of experience and know how in the field of optical laser measurement technology and will be able to use their potential to the full through wenglor's global sales network. For wenglor, the acquisition means a strategic expansion of the product portfolio and another addition of new technologies.
MEL Mikroelektronik GmbH was founded in 1985 and has its headquarters in Eching near Munich. Following failed attempts to find a successor for the family enterprise founded by Hans-Jürgen Langer, a fusion with wenglor was taken into account. After numerous meetings and negotiations over many months, MEL managing director Langer and the wenglor management team led by Dieter, Fabian and Rafael Baur came to an agreement. Since Friday last week, MEL is now part of wenglor.
Despite the takeover, Langer will continue to work for MEL in his previous role for the next two years to allow a smooth transition of the company management. In addition, wenglor appointed the previous Head of Product Management Torsten Hellerström as an additional managing director in Eching to organize the coordination between the two companies. The integration will be divided into several stages with the company continuing to operate under its previous name at first.
Due to its technology leadership in the field of light section sensors Hans-Jürgen Langer's company was able to achieve constant sales figures. However, instead of having its own active distribution, the company organized the sale of their products through trading partners. The use of the global wenglor distribution system and of the overall company structure is now supposed to make the product range even better known and more successful. "wenglor and MEL complement each other in an ideal way: We can use their technologies and market the products through our distribution system,“ explains Rafael Baur. "We are one hundred percent convinced that we made the right decision for wenglor.“ With the takeover of the Munich company, the optical sensor technology will continue to remain wenglor's prime discipline also in the future.

Fast and accurate optical ranging sensors and innovative 2D scanners, lasers and inductive high-temperature proximity switches up to 400°C further extend wenglor's technological competence for industrial automation applications. However, MEL is not the first company to be acquired by wenglor. The family enterprise already expanded its product range in the previous year: In 2012, wenglor acquired the previous Tettnang-based AFM Sensorik GmbH, which will be renamed wenglor fluid GmbH as of September 15, and now markets the new flow sensors in an independent business division under wenglorFluid. wenglor's product portfolio was thus already extended by flow, pressure and temperature sensors in 2012.
