Water Treatment Plant Designed by Severn Trent Services

Water Treatment Plant Designed by Severn Trent Services-Apliclor and City Council Solves Long-standing Problem of Iron and Manganese in Puig-reig, Spain's Drinking Water
Company also provided an Aquadiox® chlorine dioxide generating system, which will minimise hazardous trihalomethanes compared to traditional use of chlorine.

BARCELONA, Spain - A new water treatment plant designed by Severn Trent Services-Apliclor and the Puig-reig (Spain) City Council is solving the long-standing problem of elevated iron and manganese levels in the city's drinking water. Using chlorine dioxide for pre-oxidation treatment, the plant also is minimising hazardous compounds that are formed by the reaction of chlorine with organic matter.

The plant, located near Barcelona in northeastern Spain, was constructed in accordance with the Spanish government's Plan E economic stimulus plan. SOREA, a part of Agbar, a global leader in water distribution and treatment services, served as the general contractor for the project worth 750,000 (USD $1,052,925). The treatment plant covers 1,500 m2 and treats up to 80 m3/hr to provide water for the 4,000 inhabitants of Puig-reig. The facility was dedicated by the Mayor of Puig-Reig and local government representatives.

The new treatment plant, which consists of pre-oxidation, coagulation/flocculation, filtration and disinfection systems, significantly improves the quality of the water by removing iron and manganese. In addition, Severn Trent Services-Apliclor's Aquadiox® chlorine dioxide generating system serves as the pre-oxidation process as an alternative to the use of chlorine. By using chlorine dioxide instead of chlorine, the treatment plant minimises trihalomethanes, hazardous compounds that are generated by the reaction of chlorine and organic matter during the water treatment process.
