Voluntary Standards Cover the Spectrum: from Thermoplastic Containers to Male Contraceptives
In an effort to communicate the vital role that standards play in daily life, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publishes snapshots of the diverse standards initiatives undertaken in the global and national standards arena, many of which are performed by ANSI members and ANSI-accredited standards developers. Two of the latest selections follow:
Thermoplastic Containers
Thermoplastics are substances that become plastic upon heating, harden upon cooling, and are able to repeat these processes. Thermoplastics have wideranging applications including acrylic used in Plexiglas or Lucite; polyester and nylon used in textiles such as carpet and clothing; Teflon used as non-stick coating of cookware; and much more. A recently released American National Standard (ANS) provides safety guidelines for the proper use of thermoplastic containers used for the storage of refuse.

Male Contraceptives
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections occur every year in the United States, and account for almost $16 billion in health care costs. When used properly, male contraceptives, commonly referred to as condoms, are proven to protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and prevent unwanted pregnancy.
To ensure condoms are manufactured to meet safety requirements, ASTM International has published ASTM D349215, Standard Specification for Rubber Contraceptives (Male Condoms). This ANS is intended to assist buyers in obtaining condoms of consistent quality and covers the minimum requirements for individually packaged male condoms made from natural rubber latex and intended for single use. ASTM International, an ANSI member and audited designator, seeks to develop voluntary consensus standards to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence.
