Vishay Systems to Install Five Custom-Designed Reel Optimizing Systems in Russian Pulp and Paper Mill to Improve Production

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA January 5, 2007 Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE:VSH) announces that its Vishay Systems division recently sold five Reel Optimizing Systems (ROS) to Kondopoga Pulp and Paper Mill (CSC Kondopoga), the largest Russian producer and exporter of newsprint. CSC Kondopoga is located in the Karelian Republic in the northwestern part of the Russian Federation. Reel Optimizing Systems use strain gage-based load cells and transducer-based measurement and control technology to improve productivity at paper manufacturing plants. Vishay is the major producer of strain gages and strain gage-based load cells, as well as systems based on strain gage technology. The Vishay Systems office in Sweden will install five of the custom-designed Vishay Nobel Reel Optimizing Systems in the Kondopoga facility, with completion expected by May 2007.

The Reel Optimizing Systems will help CSC Kondopoga to improve paper density, remove wrinkles, and reduce web breaks in the production of high-quality newsprint. Each Reel Optimizing System provides online measurement and control, on each side of the machine, of all force and movement. This method eliminates all problems caused by friction, non-parallelism, and general wear and tear. Automatic weighing and dead weight are carried out to compensate for different weights when changing reel spools in the primary arms. Each system controls the nip force during shifting phases and correct for angle changes when lowering reels. Parallelism, acceleration, and speed are all controlled during the lowering process. This process minimizes pope speed and any variations in web tension. When shifting, the forces between the primary and secondary arms are added to ensure that the required linear force is maintained.

Reel Optimizing System measurement data is presented online as current data. The systems optimizing logger stores the data for later analysis in servicing as well as quality and product research. Lists of set values for different qualities can be pre-programmed and even adjusted within selected areas by an operator. Paper thickness and density are calculated by measuring the revolutions of the pope roller and the reel spool. At the same time, very accurate measurement of length and diameter are also recorded.

Total production capacity of the CSC Kondopoga mill has been projected to be as high as 700,000 tons per year. Currently, approximately 75 percent of CSC Kondopogas output is exported to Asia and Europe. Key Russian customers include several prominent publishing companies.
