In the video, posted today at www.TransportationTV.org, St. Onge states that while South Carolina has the fourth largest state-managed road network in the country, it also has the fourth lowest gas tax in the US. "That math just doesn't add up," says St. Onge.
St. Onge says streamlining the delivery of transportation projects to save time and reduce construction costs is also on his list of priorities. His overarching strategy will be to take a "holistic" approach and study how all transportation modes can benefit the state.
St. Onge earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point in 1969. Upon graduating from USMA, St. Onge began a 34-year career in the United States Army, retiring in 2003 as a major general. St. Onge then worked in the private sector for several years before South Carolina Governor Nikki R. Haley appointed him Secretary of Transportation in January 2011.
