Using a Data Logger to Brew Your Own Beer

Craft Better Beer Whether You're a Hobbyist or Microbrewery

CHESTERLAND OH — Home brewing kits and classes have exploded in popularity in recent years along with microbrewing. Every year, hobbyists and small businesses are producing new flavors for friends and customers alike, and people are always experimenting with ways to reproduce the right taste. If you're interested in brewing, you can turn to a technological solution, using an inexpensive thermocouple datalogger to accurately monitor the temperature in a glass or plastic carboy. Many data loggers also have alarm functionality allowing you to quickly respond to temperature anomalies, adding a safeguard helping to prevent your beer from losing the desired flavor and consistency. CAS DataLoggers has several low-cost devices which connect to a thermocouple so you can do a quick temperature check any time to see how your beer is coming along.

Each beer style has a proper temperature range that you can't go beyond without risking its quality. It's common to use other measurement equipment while brewing, like hydrometer, and using a data logger also helps monitor other temperature-sensitive points in the brewing process such as cooling wort, the liquid resulting from the mashing process.

A data logger tracks the carboy's internal fermentation temperature for you, recording the whole process to give you effective quality control. Just place a thermocouple probe into the carboy and connect it to the logger, which you can just tape to the side or place nearby. Run the thermocouple's cable through the stopper and then seal the container as you normally would. Setup the datalogger and it will now continually monitor the beer's temperature for any temperature deviation away from the benchmark you set.

A great example of these products include our Lascar USB Thermocouple Dataloggers, which connect with several common thermocouple types and can monitor the carboy's internal temperature. Available in both LCD and non-LCD versions, this standalone data logger measures and stores up to 32,510 temperature readings for extended recording. We also supply a K-type thermocouple with these data loggers designed to measure temperatures from 0 to 400ºC (32 to 752ºF). Just attach a thermocouple via the socket at the base of the unit. It's easy to set up the thermocouple type, logging rate, start time, and other preferences. When the logger memory is full, just download the stored data by plugging the data logger into a PC's USB port and run the free EasyLog software under Windows 2000, XP or Vista. You can even graph, print and export the data to other applications. The data logger is supplied complete with a long-life lithium battery, which will last for approximately 6 months.
