UC Berkeley Student Wins Make the Unmakeable Global 3D Printing Challenge, Donates Grand Prize 3D Printer To University
Oakland, California — Casey Rogers, leader of a student-run maker space out of UC Berkeley's Bechtel Engineering Center, has been announced as the Grand Prize Champion of the Make The Unmakeable Global 3D Printing Challenge.
The grand prize, a uPrint SE professional-grade 3D printer,was awarded to the participant whose design wouldn't be possible to manufacture using traditional methods. The Make The Unmakeable Challenge, put on by FATHOM and GrabCAD, was open to submissions from anywhere in the world, and drew hundreds of submissions from 19 countries, spanning four continents.
"With so many 3D printing professionals submitting designs to the contest, it's really exciting to see submissions like Casey's coming from college campuses,"Rich Stump, Principal and Co-Founder of FATHOM."His design really embodied what the challenge was all about."
Rogers' design, the Quadcopter Universal Gripper for the Horus Drone, showcases the 3D printing interest burgeoning throughout universities worldwide. Asoneofthe 3D printing club's founding members, Rogers has decided to donate his prize, which retailsfor more than $15,000, directly to the student-run makerspace.
"I'm donating the prize to 3D Modeling Club's maker space on the UC Berkeley campus—I'm excited to see what kind of cool stuff my fellow club members can come up with," Rogers said. "The uPrint SE will be our most advanced piece of equipment yet!"
Rogers feels the makerspace provides students an exceptional way to channel their creativity and explore new passions.
"Our maker space is an interesting and unique group. We're about half computer science majors, half miscellaneous humanities majors," Rogers said. "The space has given a lot of people, including myself, a glimpse into this really exciting new technology that our curriculum otherwise wouldn't have provided."
FATHOM is scheduled to deliver the prize 3D printer to Rogers and the Berkeley club next month.
