U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day to Build Upon International Message
Less than one month remains before the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day (WSD). An exhibition, reception, and dinner to mark the occasion will be held on October 23, 2008, focusing on the theme Intelligent and Sustainable Buildings.
As the world's population becomes increasingly urbanized, the design and construction of buildings that are economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable has become an international priority. This year's event will spotlight the critical role of standards and conformity assessment programs in incorporating new technologies that support and make possible this kind of construction.
Celebrated annually, World Standards Day serves to raise awareness of the importance of international standardization to the world economy and to promote its role in helping meet the needs of business, industry, government, and consumers worldwide. The global celebration is coordinated by the principal international standards organizations: the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
According to IEC, ISO, and ITU leaders, "International standards help to ensure not only basic quality and safety requirements, but also the incorporation of new technologies for the construction and operation of intelligent and sustainable buildings."
Since the initial celebration in 1970, World Standards Day is now recognized in nations around the globe. U.S. activities are organized annually by a planning committee consisting of representatives from across the standards and conformity assessment community. The event is co-chaired by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC, bringing together leaders in business, industry, academia, and government along with consumer representatives and experts in science and technology. In addition to the exhibition and reception, the evening will include the presentation of the 2008 Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award and an awards ceremony for the winners of the 2008 WSD Paper Competition.

The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day is part of the World Standards Week (WSW) series of events. Scheduled for Monday, October 20 to Thursday, October 23, 2008, WSW will be held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
ANSI encourages any World Standards Week attendees who have not yet made hotel arrangements to do so as soon as possible. The WSW room block at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel has already sold out; ANSI has reserved a second room block at the Marriott Bethesda. Attendees are encouraged to secure reservations by Sunday, September 28, 2008, in order to guarantee the negotiated rate.
