ANSI Sponsors U.S.-German Cooperation on Education Expert Dialogue

Press release date: December 23, 2010

In today's global economy, nations' economic competitiveness and interdependence have never been more entwined as systemic transformations are taking place in the way we approach teaching and learning. Education and training systems must address the needs of an increasingly global workforce. The development of trans-national education and training terminology was the focus of the U.S.-German Cooperation on Education Expert Dialogue in Washington, DC, last week. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) was an active participant and sponsor of the inaugural meeting's welcome dinner. The event focused on the development of common competencies-oriented terminology that will support the continuing evolution of education and training in U.S. and Germany, and contribute to a broader dialogue on the role of education, workforce, and economic development. With issues of trans-national compatibility and accountability in mind, participants examined how a common terminology could facilitate communication on validation or qualification approaches. Among those in attendance were education researchers and practitioners from government institutions, education and training organizations, employers, and trade unions. The first in a series of related conferences, the U.S.-German Cooperation on Education event was jointly organized by ANSI Board Director-at-Large elect Dr. Keith Bird, senior policy fellow for workforce and postsecondary education at the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce (CSW), and Dr. Volker Rein of the Bundesinstitute für Berufsbildung (BIBB). The next meeting will take place as part of the second bi-national cooperation conference on education in Spring 2011. Details of the meeting are forthcoming.
