Toshiba Adds 4GB microSDHC Card to Extensive Memory Card Line-Up

High-capacity Class 4 SDHC card for Mobile Phones Supports up to 69 Hours of Music or 28 Hours of TV Programs

TOKYO and IRVINE, Calif., June 27 -- Toshiba Corp. (Toshiba), a leading innovator in memory card solutions, today announced with Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, its subsidiary in the Americas, that it has expanded its line of small-format, high-speed, high-capacity memory cards with the launch of a 4-(1) (GB) microSDHC card. The addition of the new card extends Toshiba's comprehensive range of microSDHC cards, the preferred memory card for mobile phone applications, from 256MB(2) (MB) up to 4GB. The new cards will be available worldwide beginning in July.

Toshiba's 4GB microSDHC card meets SD memory card standard Ver. 2.00(3), the SDHC card standard for high density SD products with a capacity of over 2GB. The card is designed for use in dedicated microSDHC slots, but can also be used in standard SDHC card slots in an adapter.

The market for high density memory cards will grow alongside increasing demand for digital equipment, such as mobile phones that can record and display video and high resolution images. Toshiba will continue to expand and upgrade its SDHC and SD Memory Card series to meet the growing demand for high-speed, high-capacity products.

SD Memory Cards
The SD memory card was jointly developed in 1999 by Toshiba Corporation, SanDisk Corporation and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (best known for its Panasonic brand name products). SD memory cards have been widely adopted worldwide. Toshiba has shipped more than 300 million memory cards(8) and is currently the world's second largest supplier(9) of NAND Flash memory. The addition of the SDHC card to the Toshiba SD Card family addresses the growing demand for high capacity storage.

The Toshiba SD Memory Card family now includes standard SD memory cards, as well as miniSD, microSD and SDHC cards. The entire SD card line features cryptographic security, protection of copyrighted data, high-data transfer rate for fast copy/download and high storage capacity. TAEC currently offers SD Memory Cards with storage capacities of 1GB and 2GB in both its standard (blue) product family, and a higher performance (white) family of cards. The Toshiba SD Memory card line-up now includes miniSD in capacities ranging from 512MB to 2GB, microSDHC cards in capacities of 2GB and 4GB, and SDHC Cards in capacities of 4GB and 8GB.

(1) When used herein in relation to memory density, gigabyte and/or GB
means 1,024x1,024x1,024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Usable capacity may be
less. For details, please refer to specifications.
(2) When used herein in relation to memory density, megabyte and/or MB
means 1,024x1,024 = 1,048,576 bytes. Usable capacity may be less. For
details, please refer to specifications.
(3) SDHC Memory Cards can only be used for devices that support the SD
Memory Card Ver2.00 standard. SDHC Memory Cards are not backward
compatible with standard SD Memory Card slots, as the file formats
differ.
(4) The number of hours were estimated by dividing the memory capacity by
the stated bit rate.
(5) For purposes of measuring data transfer rate in this context, 1
kilobit (kb) = 1,000 bits.
(6) Read and write speed may vary depending on the read and write
conditions, such as devices you use and file sizes you read and/or
write. (For purposes of measuring write speed in this context, 1 MB =
1,000,000 bytes).
