Toppan's GL Film Poised to Transform Packaging in North America

Georgia-based production strengthens supply capability

CHICAGO - Packaging innovation continues to interest suppliers transitioning to more environmentally responsible products that positively impact earnings. Transparent barrier film is taking deeper root in North America than ever before.

Switching from cans to pouches can significantly reduce weight and CO2 emissions and, with North Americans stretched for time, it helps that the product is microwavable.

Tokyo-based Toppan Printing, whose GL Film is known overseas as the top transparent barrier film brand, senses opportunities in North America. In June Toppan announced construction of a new plant in Griffin, Ga, targeting mass production in March 2016. Sales of approximately $971 million are targeted for transparent barrier film-related business in FY2018.

"GL Film is used for 15,000 products across 45 countries, but this will be our first GL plant overseas," said Sumio Ezaki, director and head of Toppan's International Division, Singapore Branch, and Barrier Film Center. "We ship to the U.S., but the Georgia facility strengthens supply capability and will better serve North American clients. We will launch barrier business in diverse fields, not just packaging. In addition to GL, we will develop various films to meet diverse needs."

Original vapor deposition technology gives GL Film world-class performance and stability. It is used in a variety of consumables' packaging and also for industrial materials, pharmaceuticals, electronics and more.
