Thermo Introduces Silo Tracking Software

San Diego, CA - September 5, 2006 - Thermo Electron Corporation, an industry leading producer of analytical and process instrumentation, today introduced its new Silo Tracking Software(TM) (STS), which is designed to show the variations in the coal quality in downstream silos and stockpiles when combined with Thermo's online coal analyzers. The new STS acts as an early warning to power plants and coal producers, helping them to avoid emission exceedances and derates, and more accurately blend to their target coal quality.

Using Thermo's STS to track downstream coal quality, coal producers will be able to know - at any point in time - the average coal quality of each downstream silo or stockpile, and the predicted quality of the coal being withdrawn from feeders at the base of the silo or stockpile. As a result, coal producers will know whether they have the requisite coal quality to achieve their target quality when loading a train or barge.

In power plant settings, Thermo's STS gives users an early warning system, allowing them to know if the coal they are feeding the boiler is going to result in an exceedance, or cause them to derate. For example, a Nevada plant is already using Thermo's software as an integral part of its compliance plan to satisfy Department of Environmental Quality regulations.

"Thermo Electron has worked with customers for more than 20 years on similar, customized software products that address their specific coal analysis applications," said Richard Woodward, DireDirieioeoseudirector of marketing for Thermo Electron. "As the price of coal and SO2 emission credits continue to climb, we owe it to Thermo's valued customers to continue to provide end-to-end solutions for coal analysis. STS is one more way we are improving the utility of our coal analyzers and enabling our customers to derive greater value from their investment."
